Golden rule is that you should never give a number.

1. Try and get it to accept the application with no value in there
2. put all '0's

I had an interview with a company that got pretty nasty with me about this subject, it was an easy way for me to find out I would never want to work for those asshats.

Well guys, color me n00b. I was afraid my application would time out and there isn't a feature to save it, so I went ahead and put 68k.

I just hope they never bring up that number.

I have no idea why a company would ask this question. They already know what they are willing to pay and what will be required to keep you as an employee. It's a dumb question.

My company does what most large firms do. They find out what their competition is paying and then offer at the high end of the range to make sure they get the best. They also keep us in that range, based on experience and job size/level.

If you quote way above their top range, it's a waste of your time and theirs to be talking. It's just a basic screening question. Answer honestly by giving your real range and saying that it really depends on the position and the opportunity it offers.

Negative. If the HR department want's to play those type of games, you don't want to work there. As they surely have some other assinine policies. Go with competitive, if they throw a hissy fit over that/weed you out, congratulations you dodged a bullet.

The easiest way to get money is to ask for it, so ask for a lot. If they feel it?s to much they will counter with a lower number.

The one time in the past 30 years that I was an employee, they asked me what I wanted at the interview, so I asked for everything, top money, bennys, a truck allowance, a gas card to buy fuel for said truck. They said yes, which was kind of a dirty trick because I didn?t want the job and expected they?d say no.
