YAJobT: Please help me decide

I am in a job I don't necessarily love right now, and I've just been offered a position in management. I would be a project manager - nobody reporting to me - and it would be in Marketing, whereas I would like my career path to be through Finance (I've worked in Marketing before, but it was a Finance-oriented position). Even though I'm going to be doing some Finance-oriented things, it will be primarily a Marketing position.

From a career standpoint, I had almost written it off. I might be able to get a similar offer 6 - 8 months down the road, though it might be in Marketing as well.

From a money standpoint, this would be a raise of somewhere around $17.5k (~22% over my current pay). MASSIVE raise. I can hardly freaking type right now I'm shaking so much.

What would you do? The money is great, but I don't hate my current job (probably wouldn't hate this new one either), and I could possibly find a similar job in Finance (key word is POSSIBLY) in 6 - 8 months.

i would go for the higher job first so it would look good on a resume. then down the line make the change and say "i could continue to do this, so pay me more"

of course i'm only 20...lifelong goals should not be made by someone of my state nor atot to decide.

I'm only 27. Can you imagine making $80k+ in the midwest at 27?

Career paths rarely end up looking how we expect them to.

If you feel you will enjoy the position, take it and see where it leads you.

Take the promotion now... live with it for about a year. Do a great job, and ask for a transfer to finance.

I can't "transfer," per se. If after a year I wanted to move back to Finance, I would put in an application for any open jobs. The hiring manager would then evaluate me for the spot. I have a good reputation in Finance, but it's not exactly a piece of cake to move back to Finance from Marketing - it's much easier the other way around.

most of ATOT makes that much, if not more by the time they were 25 (or so they claim).

IMHO, getting the title of "Project Manager" and actually doing project management stuff is a huge boost to you no matter what field/industry you work in. I'd grab it, milk it for the experience and then after a bit when you feel comfortable what you are doing go for something in your desired field.

Project Management is a pretty lucrative career at this current time. You'd be setting yourself up quite well for future opportunities.

I made it by the time the Dr. cut my cord.

Yeah, but they're all probably living in the slums in Cali. $80k here is good freaking money.

Thanks VI, I have to agree, and that's exactly why I was initially going for this job. But I thought I would be managing things at a higher level, not so much Marketing-specific work.

I'm definitely leaning towards the money. I CAN'T HELP IT! Though I should be clear that I was the one that proactively persued this job in the first place, so it's not like I didn't want it at all... it's just a little different than I expected.

talk to your boss/mentor/supervisor about it.

Once you start off on a certain job track, it is very hard to go back.
