YAJHT (Yet another Job Hunting Thread)

So I'm filling out this application to a company for a position that looked nice, and after going through and uploading my resume, it takes me to yet another "fill out this section" page after I literally already filled out ten pages.

The new section has a lot of the same information requested that the previous pages had, but wants a ridiculous amount of detail. So I already uploaded my resume, my job dates, my address, and what each position required, but now this new section looks like it was designed by a retard.

It literally has ten separate positions, one for each previous job, and each position not only is asking the months I worked at each position, but the specific day that I started and left.

How the f*ck am I supposed to remember the exact day I started a job 20 years ago on? This is a detail level that I can't even get from my credit report. It wants the specific day of the month I started my college, and the specific day of the month that I graduated, same goes for high school along with the aforementioned jobs, and also addresses.

I never even thought I would have to fill out precise details of which day I started / ended a job, or went to school, heck I can't even find that anywhere. On top of that, things like "desired time / shift to work" instead of having a nice box for each day has a checkbox for each time period in which you desire to work. Simple things like "do you have a license, if yes, if it's special write the extra qualifications in the box", yet it won't let you move on if you don't put something in the box.

This is the most retarded shit I've ever seen for an online job hunt. I was literally 15 pages into filling this out when I gave up. I have applied to positions in hospitals, have gone through a ton of HIPAA training for patient data storage procedures, went through several background checks and none I have ever seen wanted this level of detail.

cliff notes: Applied online to some place that wanted ridiculous level of detail beyond what the normal online application needs. Ended up not applying.

any place that i have to fill an extensive application just to get submitted, i simply dont apply. that is definitely a turnoff and tells me that the company probably micromanages like shit if they want that much detail before even getting on the phone with you.

dont sweat it pal, just put the first of the month, nobody will care

It still bothers me that some web dev thought to himself "I'll outdo all those other job forms and make it as long as possible!"

For example putting a checkmark in for every position, for each day, and then having a checkmark at the end of the block, basically involves a 7 x 7 field of checkboxes (6 checkboxes representing every 4 hr block in the day, with a final box for can't work this day).

Maybe the whole thing is just an endurance test to see who actually goes through and fills out the whole thing. I don't want to make up date portions that I don't remember though, because it bothers me at some level.

When it comes to stuff like that I usually wing it. You should do the same! Might be a job worth applying for...

I'm not going to waste a half hour filling out an online form just to not get called about it.

15 pages is my limit on applying online for something - you know why? Because you end up filling out the same stuff yet again if you actually get the job.

I'm especially not applying when I filled out ten pages and then am faced with yet more pages requesting the info on the exact stuff I just filled out.

I have been applying online for various positions for ten years now and have never seen anything like this.

yea i've been looking recently as well and have noticed that a lot of places do want you to fill out pages and pages of crap, and like i said i just close the window and move onto the next one.

the worst was this geico one i filled out. i can't remember exactly what the question was, because i actually was going through and filling it out, but it was enough to piss me off and just close it. i think it was like asking me about my salary history at a job that i started right out of school in 2004. i was just like 'this is totally irrelevant' and closed the window.

I upload my coverletter and a resume. All the other "fields" i just put "see resume." I have such a deep seated hatred for those HR websites. I have fantasized about blowing up Taeleo HQ, if i only knew where it was...

Yeah the older forms used to just ask salary at a position, but the newer ones want starting salary along with ending salary. Why? I have no idea.

I implement these systems for a living. It's amazing what some clients think they need in terms of data. I talk with them about candidate attrition and the deterioration of data quality the more you require, but some people just absolutely believe they need every last detail of your medical record to see if you will qualify as a clerk.

Out of curiosity, which system were you in? You can usually tell by the URL. Taleo? ICIMS?

I just applied for a job that had a section for each employer that had normal things like Job Title, Job Location. And then there was this check box and by it said "Current or Past Employers". I have no idea what that check box is for. I could understand the "Current Employer" check box, but I think every employer that I have worked for is a Current or Past one. Plus, it had pluralized employer for some reason.

I just left them all unchecked

The URL that came up was silkroad with the company name in front of it. We use Taleo where I work and I don't mind it, to be honest.

I used to get annoyed and skip those too. But then again, most people do, so it might be worth finishing

The problem is that it won't let you skip it. Even some of the fields like "drivers license" that say explicitly in the instructions to only fill out the field if you have some additional qualifications (e.g. CDL), when you hit next it forces you to put something in that field.

They are collecting that ton of data from you to use for background checking. That is why it is so much more extensive than an application.

Why you'd collect background data at point of application is beyond fathoming to me.

This is one of the things that annoys me about today's job hiring process; everybody wants a piece of the data mining pool so they can sell off your data.

Sounds like silkroad is just using that to their benefit.

I much prefer Taleo when applying for a job, maybe it's just a personal preference but all of the taleo forms I've seen used so far aren't as invasive.

There's a little misconception there. Applicant tracking systems do not own the data they collect. The company you are applying to owns the data. The ATS providers do not use, sell, or most of the time even access the data.

Ah ok I am relieved then. 🙂
