I'm a senior level app administrator. Over the years, our software development crew has written an in-house app that connects to one of my canned apps through the SDK. As a result, before I am allowed to upgrade my app, I have to notify them so they can perform their test plan. I notified them about 7 weeks ago that I had an extremely critical service pack I need to apply, and that they needed to run through their test plan as quickly as possible. My hope was to get the patch applied in 1-2 weeks.

The awesome girl who previously performed the test plan has gone on to bigger responsibilities. It typically took her 1 full business day to perform the plan.

The newish guy was told that this test plan was his primary responsibility. He's had it for 6.5 weeks and still just finished QA testing last week, which means he's just over halfway done. He's the social butterfly type - he barely warms his chair on any given day. He comes in late & leaves early. His boss had "The Talk" with him last week, but I'm not sure it penetrated his skull.

I found out about a week ago that the VP over IT has given my service pack project a high priority with a completion date of no later than the end of July. I've jumped through the hoops with all the stakeholders to get my upgrade scheduled for this Wednesday... I got an email from the idiot that he *promises* the test plan will be complete by COB Thursday.

Not sure what I'm going to do, but once the poopy hits the fan, every person from me up to the VP over IT is going to know the idiot's name.

Thanks for listening.

Love,
NuclearNed

I'm all for hating on Millennials. We're the worst. But I don't understand how this is a millennial issue. Doesn't he just suck at his job?

You're acting like only young people are idiots? I know plenty of older folks here at the office who are just as terrible to work with.

Unless he's acting all entitled and lazy, I don't see how this is related to millennials. Guy just sounds stupid and/or bad with time management.

He is typical of the kids we've hired over the past 5 years. They don't want to work. At all. I guess they think they were hired for their expertise.

Not sure how that is relevant, but I'm paid in bacon & sexual favors.

It's relevant because it indicates to me you're commercial value!

And, I have a strong suspicion that you are just some angry old senor level admin (or whatever) that hates to see some young blood around you....

Yes, I'm a millennial (not your typical [or at least what you think]). I've worked around these type of people (mostly old) that feel young people are disrespectful, young people are entitled, young people are this and that etc....

They usually bitter of their accomplishments (lack of) and are sitting on the bottom rung of the company. While I get another job offer making much more than they will ever make and they smell my tire smoke as I leave.....

Ok, 1st let me say that we have some new hires (also millinials) who are awesome. They are few in number and seem to be the exceptions to the rule. 2nd, I'm not going to brag about my salary, but let's say that I'm well established.

But let's get back to my story. It kind of seems like you are sticking up for this guy (& others like him). So you think I should be cool with the fact that this guy has taken over 6 weeks (& counting) to accomplish something that takes a similarly-aged person 1 single day???

So why is there not some automated test procedure already developed for their application by the awesome girl.

There are tools out on the market that the team should be using that would allow this testing to have been done as soon as you implemented your changes.

It would seem that your testing section has failed to plan properly.

I'm not sure, and I don't really care about how the developers do their business. The real answer is probably something like "because we're cheap"

You'd think having the kid see the CC to his boss/your boss would light a fire under his ass.

I sent an email to virtually everyone involved a couple of weeks ago... it didn't make any difference.

LOLOLOLOL

The idea that the young are cheap is a ridiculous statement in 2015. In many cases the youth make more than their older counterparts.

You would, but it isn't so much for scaring him as it is to protect NN when/if shit hits the fan and the VP/managers come to him pointing their fingers.

Can you get me a job?

Credentials: I like puters. I work 60-84 hours a week for peanuts. I am available for immediate hiring starting in 2020.

There is not enough information about you're environment to even make a recommendation about him/her etc..

But in all fairness, if you have email with CCed and another manager already spoke to him about it then why are you complaining! Also, if he's new, he's new to the process and the way the company does things. It doesn't mean he's entitled, lazy, stupid etc...

In addition it seems you're management doesn't seem to manage properly, if you have an employee not occupying his desk and being too social that would have been nipped in the bud early, by some companies I've worked for.

I'm pretty sure Ned's comment was about why they hadn't purchased automated tools that are available. Being categorized as somewhere between Gen X and millennial I've got to say there are a fair number of my peers that annoy the hell out of me thinking they're entitled to this that and the other but there are as many baby boomers that I've worked with that have the same mindset. Rather than blame it on this generation or that generation I think it's just an issue of people are lazy and want to get paid as much as possible for a little work as possible. Nothing irritates me more than a coworker taking a week to complete a task that I know takes an hour

/facepalm

this guy has gone 7 weeks on something that should not take that long. He has been told to get moving and has not.

I do question why you would let it go on 7 weeks without taking it from him and having someone esle do it.

Yep, this is a very good idea.

Damn, OP. Looks like there's a lot of people excusing this numbnuts' shitty work performance. I'm a Millennial myself, just barely, but from the sounds of it this guy blows at his job, or perhaps "working" in general.

We've got a guy like that here. I told him I needed a firm commitment to a testing date back in April, in the beginning of May he finally agreed to 5/20. As of 5/21 I hadn't heard anything, so I start barking at people to find out what the status is, and a week later he finally gets back to me that he can arrange for testing in a month, and by the way, what is he supposed to be testing. I'd really like to pay a homeless guy to strangle him to death. Then maybe violate the corpse.

Gotcha. Well for as many entitled and lazy Mil's there are, I work with just as many cranky, stubborn and cynical baby boomers. It's give and take, one just needs to approach things from different angles.

His boss has several people just like him. In some respects I think she does a great job, but I think she has a problem being confrontational with her reports.

Yeah, there are lazy people of all ages. The laziest people I ever worked with:

1. At a company I worked at 14 or 15 years ago, one of the desktop support guys was in his early 20s. He would go off and take naps under stair wells, in the back of the building, etc.
2. At another company I worked for, the laziest guy was in his mid 40s or so and ran around declining work because he was "SO BUSY." Everyone knew he was full of it and almost everyone knew he would take naps in the restroom.
3. The last company I was at, my last manager was a lazy moron in his late 50s. He delegated everything and pretty much did nothing and provided no value.
