It's so close.. We're only talking about a 10kt difference.

Ike is a very large storm. It isn't about wind speeds anymore. Even if it does intensify another 10kt, it isn't going to make much of a difference damage wise, the storm surge is already going to do all the damage.

^^ Co-signed, I can't believe people would be that stupid. The storm surge at landing is estimated to be from 20 to 25 feet in the worst hit areas, which will demolish Galveston.

In terms of intensity, even though Ike is only a CAT 2 and maybe CAT 3 at landfall, in terms of storm surge and size, it is the second most powerful hurricane in the last 40 years.

There is no excuse for this in 2008! The reason 8,000-12,000 people died in 1900 was because we didn't have satellites and hurricane hunters to forecast the storm weeks before hand.

They(the state of Texas), are already projecting Galveston, Texas City, Clear Lake, Port Aurther, and Beaumont to be under water by 3am if the current path holds.

As for mandatory evacuations. There ARE mandatory evacuations but they never get everyone. The government cannot force people to leave.

Ike is likely going to be the costliest hurricane ever. It may have a very long reaching economic impact if the refineries flood as expected.
 
Yeah, my mom, brother, grandmother, and pretty much an entire side of my family is in the Galveston/Houston area. They are refusing to leave. I am really worried. Last time they evacuated it took them an extremely long time to get to a safe place, and they don't want to "deal" with that.

It's also kind of sad that the real problem apparently hasn't been remedied yet.

"Hey, this sea wall didn't do jack against a high storm surge. Oh well, a big hurricane probably won't ever come through here again. It'll be fine."

Well see thats because the Rita evacuation was fubared. Everyone left, even people that would have been relatively safe.

Texas has expressly told people NOT in the storm surge vacinities NOT to evacuate. There havent been the lines of traffic like before.

EVERYONE, in Galveston, Texas City, Clear Lake and Port Aurther SHOULD have heeded the NOAA and the State of Texas warnings.

Good point. My mom isn't technically in the evacuation zone. Rita was a disaster. It sucks for Houston IMO, I feel that they are either too worried or not worried enough. 😕

Have you tried calling and explaining that this hurricane is much, much worse than any other hurricane that has hit that area in the time that they have lived there, and maybe, just maybe, they should consider getting out of its path? I wish your family the best of luck, but I have to echo the sentiments expressed by others; if you are warned of the dangers ahead of time and choose to press on despite them, you have no right to complain when things get bad. I don't see this ending well for them.

Try calling them again and letting them know your concern for their safety. Ultimately, they are responsible for their own lives, but with a little prodding, maybe you can convince them that those lives are worth protecting at the inconvenience of a few days of their time.

They aren't in the zip code that has mandatory evacuations, but they are still right there.
My mother is stubborn as hell and will not listen to reason about this. She wouldn't even accept me buying her a plane ticket to stay with me.
I used to be fiercely against evacuating too, not putting that much weight in how bad a storm was going to be.
Then I saw my front porch float away and land on my car.
Then I saw water come in my house.
Then I had to be rescued from the roof of my house.
Then I lost everything I owned except the clothes on my back and my cats.

If I was in Houston I would have already evacuated whether it was mandatory or not.
