Yahoo's new beta home page

I still like using Yahoo as my home page. It loads fast, I get a lot of topline info and one-click access to major functions I routinely need. On my secondary system at work though, a different version opened up this morning.

My main workstation still gets the old version so it's obviously completely random and not dependent upon user profile. Heck, Firefox on the same machine is still getting the old version while my AvantBrowser is getting the new version.

One of the biggest things I just noticed is that this would also increase the minimum resolution needed to correctly view the page to 1024 pixels wide. Even though we have a lot of data from our own webservers indicating a majority of people now use resolutions greater than 800x600, I'm still a bit surprised Yahoo is considering such a move given their wide audience.

Yeah that's what one of our designers was just mentioning when I showed it to him.

I generally like it for the most part (particularly the way it organizes all those useful links such as Entertainment, Finance, Sports, etc on the sidebar.) I miss the ability to assign custom buttons like 'TV', 'Maps', and 'Yellow Pages' at the top though. I suppose that functionality could be available on the top-right side though if it ever comes out of beta.

On this version, no RSS or drag-and-drop on the home page. But this is Yahoo proper (i.e. yahoo.com) so that's not too surprising. Both RSS feeds and drag-and-drop are available in the personalized MyYahoo view.

do you really need that much info on one page? i enjoy the 5 links that i created, and having my gmail inbox... i ignore the weather, and dont read the quote of the day..

I've been seeing the beta page for a while now...but at home it still loads to the original which I like much better. It took me like 30 seconds to find the "mail" button the first time

I personally like having that much info. A lot of times I'm just firing up a browser to surf and something might catch my eye, be it a news headline, a movie ad or what the latest search buzz words are. Search and my favorite bookmarks are integrated in at the browser level so that's a non-issue for me.

But everyone has their personal preferences. A lot of people just prefer a blank page.

my.yahoo.com allows you to do all of that.
