Yahoogle computers ordered

If anyone has been following the saga of the Yahoogle system and is still interested I ordered two complete systems tonight using my webpage. I had planned to build 3 but one guy backed out so I ended up ordering for my brother and my brother-in-law. Just to keep things confusing I also ordered a partial system to use as an upgrade to my own computer.

I found it was quite simple to order all the parts using the buy links on my webpage, with only slight difficulties ordering the multiple items from newegg. I had to open a new window to add each item to the shopping cart. I wish I could create a buy button on my page that would take you to newegg and place one of each item in the shopping cart but I don't think it can be done.

On the bright side I found that newegg discounts the shipping as you order more items, presumably, they are passing on the savings of packing the items together in larger boxes. Although seemingly obvious, this is a pleasent surprise and a big feather in neweggs cap in my opinion. All in all I saved 15.99 from the stated shipping cost on my website. On top of that a couple items had already dropped in price just since I put the site up. The video card dropped in price by 3 bucks (interestingly, the shipping went up a dollar) and the HD dropped a buck.

On the bad side I had forgot that I wanted to use round cables, and had to go back and place a second order at newegg for those, probably ending up costing myself some unnecessary shipping costs.

Completing the orders was very easy from all of the vendors and the transactions were handled very quickly. I received email confirmations from each vendor within minutes of placing my order.

My new total cost ended up being $944.62 as opposed to $963.61 quoted on my site. That does not include tax and the round cables which don't apply to the site.

I will keep you all updated on the progress as long as there is interest, I will probably create a diary of the whole thing (with pictures) on the webite as well all the way through the final build of each system.

Thanks again to everyone who provided input and support as to the components used in the computer.

It's someone trying to help people out by putting together a very nice computer for a great price. Why are you harassing him? Grrrr... :|

Sorry I gues I should have referenced the thread that I started which explains what the website is. I vainly assumed most of the regular readers of this forum knew what it was. it is the "fairly Badass computer for under $1000" thread.

weepul, I'm surprised you are the first person to call me on the domain name. I suppose it's as much a ripoff as googlegear.com but not really. As I mentioned in my FAQ I registered the domain long before the existence of any Yahoo Google relationship.

As far as ripping anyone off, I am not selling anything (not that I wouldn't), I just thought others might find some benefit from all the research I had done creating the system, so far quite a few people have. I have also personally been helped in my research by getting feedback form the members of this forum.

The site also comes in handy for me personally since my brother lives 150 miles away. I was able to tell him just to go there and check out the system I had proposed to build him. Then it was just a matter of him telling me to go ahead. In the future if one of my friends asks me to build a system for them I may simply tell them to go to my page, order the parts themselves (no money out of my pocket) and bring them to me when they all arrive.

I hope that answers all of your questions, and as I said before I will only continue to post as long as there is interest.

This is definitely a great reference to use. Hopefully you'll have time to keep it up to date. Thanks frysad.

Very nice and informative site. I read through all your rants, and after a chuckle, find that I can relate. An acquatance was constantly trying to get me to fix this minor browser related problem that would have required me to go to her house to troubleshoot and fix. She didn't stop bugging me until I was able to convince her that a complete hdd reformatting was the way to fix it. Anyways, you reminded me or a quote someone said on the forums a while back, "We're geeks until their computer breaks, then we're friends."

Pbrain, when I read some of the stuff I wrote, I think I must have been in a pretty bad mood at the time. Reading them later they seem pretty harsh but I hope most people realize it's meant to be funny. It's when I start to think of the war stories of helping people out with their computers that my mood starts to sour. Here's one of the worst.

The receptionist at my job had recently installed (herself) a cd burner against my advice. At nearly the same time she had ordered DSL service. After Pacbell had set up her hardware they left. She of course did not have internet access and her cd burner stopped working as well. She came to me in hopes I would help her out. I quickly pointed out that I would have to look at her computer to have any hope of getting it back up. Rather than bringing the computer to work we decided it would be quicker if I went to her apartment at lunch, since she lived close by. (this is starting to sound like a Playboy forum story, isn't it?).

Well, my wife called me while I was in her car on the way to her place. I thought the right thing to do was tell her exactly where I was going and why. it wasn't.

I still ended up fixing her system, Pacbell had left it with a bunch of Irq conflicts, but I ran out of time and her scanner (which she never used) was now not working due to new conflict. I told her I would finish it later, but that I could not go back to her apartment (due to my wanting to stay married) so she would have to bring the system to work. She never did.

A few months later, I overheard her talking to someone else (who she was trying to get to fix her computer) and she told the guy that her system had been working perfectly until I touched it, and that it had simply fallen apart since then.

Am I bitter? Oh yes.

I admit to being a cynic....partly came to that point of view because I found that "the more you do for people, the less they appreciate it".

I'm about to put a system together..finding your experience helpful.

man, I gotta tell ya, your rants had me rolling on the floor! I couldn't even BELIEVE it man! :) I was reading a story about my own life!

I'm PRINTING that rant and taking it to work! :) heheheh...my boss is going to die laughing! :D

frysad, your anecdote is exactly the reason why I am hesitant to help people with their computers, I may not be able to fix their computer or may cause something else to go wrong. And when people ask me to build computers for them, unless they are very close to me, I'll decline and give them reasons why they shouldn't buy a custom built computer, for once you build a computer for somebody, you volunteer yourself to be free technical support for the life of the computer.

So this is where I disagree with you. Better they buy a Compaq, Gateway, or "eWizbatPOS" and pay for technical support instead of them calling me for help. I point out that what you pay for is what you get, and suggest some good, though more expensive, solutions. But if they have their hearts set on a "eWizbatPOS" and it ends up malfunctioning on them, I say tough luck, I don't give out free technical support. I've actually kept quiet about computers recently so that very few people know that I'm a dweeby computer geek. When people talk about computers, even when they're wrong, I just nod my head and keep quiet. Besides, what the point arguing with them when they know more than you?

I too really enjoyed the FAQ. I've had the same experiences. People are always asking me for free help with their computers. What do I look like, an eMachines tech support person? I'd never ask someone I hardly know who is a vet to look at my dog for free. Why do people constantly ask me for computer help expecting me to dish out free advice all the time when I have real job related work to do during work hours? I don't even help people buy good computers anymore, I just recommend the one with "lifetime tech support" so I don't have to do it. :)

Great, I'm glad you guys enjoyed my little whining rants! I didn't really intend for the site or this thread to be about that though. It has now gotten way off topic for this forum as frankqfrank points out. I even admit that this is all starting to look like spamming on my part, something I never want to be accused of.

accordingly, I'll start future threads regarding the yahoogle computer in the off topic forum.

Thanks again everyone for your input, whether it be praise or criticism.
