Yes, you do need Verizon phone service.

Includes a basic single computer, non-wireless DSL modem. You can also get a Westell Gateway wireless broadband router for a one time charge of $14.95.

SBC Yahoo isn't available in New York, so this tempting (because it frees up the phone line and is cheaper and presumably faster than the AOL dial-up my dad currently has).

are you sure about that? as in, dsl modem? i mean, obviously, it is a modem, but the one we got for our verizon dsl was a router/modem

I think so. I think the one that is included for free is non-wireless and intended for a single computer (I think it's also the Gateway brand).

Yeah man, been waiting for something like this in NYC, Roadrunner is a too expensive at $50 a month. Too bad though that phone service is a must.

Phone line is not a big deal for me since all I have is a $5 local line from them which I wanted anyways.

Then I question their terms...

One year commitment or qualifying local and long distance plan required.

Note the bolded word... implies that with a 1 year commitment, local and long distance service is not required.

My guess is that Yahoo teamed up with Verizon so that they can provide more national dsl coverage.

verizon has a $5 a month basic plan that has unlimited local but it's only available for a household with a total income under 20k a year or something along those lines.

Any idea how good / bad the Wesell Versalink Gateway (is it the model 327?) wireless DSL modem is compared to say a Linksys WRT54G?

Is Verizon DSL optimized for this particular DSL, in terms of ease of operation and solidity of connection? (I am a total networking newbie)

Well if you can ever figure out the QOS on the Westell let me know. And while you're at it, explain it to Verizon too. No one I talked to there even knew that the router HAD QOS features. Mine will allocate 100% of the line to the QOS port regardless of the mode and regardless of the "max" setting.

As far as ease goes, it's pretty straightforward. Though I wouldn't touch that stupid install disk again. It installs a remote control app so they can help you... And the sucker used to blow up daily. That POS isn't needed and got uninstalled pretty quickly.
