Yahoo and SBC Communications officially launched co-branded DSL service Friday, allowing the Web portal to compete with rivals in the high-speed Internet access market.

Basic service, ordinarily available for $42.95 per month, will be $29.95 per month for the first six months. That offers connection speeds of up to 384kbps.

The next level of service, at $49.95 per month, will also be offered for $29.95 per month for the first six months. It offers connection speeds of 384kbps to 1.5mbps.

The deluxe offering will cost $59.95 per month and will be discounted to $39.95 a month for the first six months. It offers speeds of 768kbps to 1.5mbps.

New residential subscribers only. Requires one-year term commitment. .95 for the first 6 months (and .95 per month for the remainder of the one-year term). Offer includes free modem and self-installation kit, with no activation fee.

Bleh RoadRunner still has the better deal. 5 times the speed (250 KBs download vs. 50 KBs) for $45 / month with 3 month free.

How about Covad's DSL? $21.95 for first 3 months and 39.95 afterwards. I have it at home and it is pretty good. I don't download or upload a lot, so it's good enough for me. One question, does anyone else with Covad have this problem of not being able to use multiple computers with the Covad DSL line? I plugged the Covad DSL line into a router but the service cannot be shared among multiple computers. It worked fine when I had AT&T cable. Anyone knows what's up?

The Covad deal has some confusions:

For its TeleSurfer LINK, the installation charge for Self-Install is free, but Covad charges $175 if you want them to install it. Then, there is a $99 equipment cost with a rebate of $99. But the rebate form said "have TeleSurfer LINK or TeleSurfer PLUS installed by Covad" to qualify for the rebate.

That's reason I hesitated to get Covad...

Also, I could not find "AT&T Broadband's promotion @ $19.95/month for the 1st 6 months" from their website. Must be a regional promotion then...

When I called up SBC/Ameritech recently to hook up telephone for my new home, I was offered this offer:

DSL, 768down/128up. Free modem & installation/activation (it is a self-install kit). 1 yr contract. $29.95/mo.

As I know I'm moving in 9 months they said if I goto another area serviced, I'm still in contract, otherwise I'm let out of it.

<edit>Oh yeah, this is in Madison WI</edit>
