Yahoo pop access will be charged now :-( should we pay for it?

I have just recieved the email stated the following

Effective April 24, 2002, Yahoo! Mail will no longer provide free POP3 Access or Auto Mail Forwarding to Yahoo! Delivers subscribers.


Thats sux! I am very much enjoy using the pop3 mail forwarding feature so I can use one outlook to receive all my emails account and without the hassle of typing in pw every time.

They are currently running a promotion of 19.99, with added feature such as send larger attachments, now up to 5MB instead of the free 1.5MB limit. Send email without the Yahoo! promotional text at the bottom.

What do you guys think is it wise to pay for that feature or there are something else thats better and free?
 
Hmm.. does this include web based email? I dont have to pay or cancel my current web based email with yahoo, do I?

No. This only affects the pop3 and smtp server-using people for programs like Eudora, Outlook Express, and Outlook. Web-based will not change.

I'll pay the fee for runbox before I pay yahoo. This is crap. If I'm going to pay for email service, I'm going to get some decent service out of the deal.
 
I will probably go through the painful process of telling long lost friends and distant relatives that I am now not using Yahoo and check every month to tell anybody who didn't get the point.
 
Their mail will still be free, except you can't get POP3 to view it in Outlook express etc. (and can't forward it either without paying).

I switched to them thinking I wouldn't have to ever switch again and I've been dooped. Hotmail will do the same now, I'm sure. I think its time to get my own domain.

well better then having them just go out of business like some other email fowarding company a while back😛 u get totally shafted that way hehe
 
Does this affect the SMTP server as well? I use a wireless Sprint modem and their service has no native SMTP server so I must use a third party. Unfortunately, almost no one offers a free smtp server due to spam issues. What to do?
 
So the question now is which free webmail also offers POP3 and SMTP access? 🙂
I like checking my mail on my palm while on the go... so thats why i need those services.
Any suggestions?

i hate using POP3 now that i got an imap from the university

my yahoo box was a spambox anyway 80+ emails a day
 
I guess they will all try that soon..and once that starts it'l be like cable. Yearly price hikes.
 
yeah, but hotmail sucks... the account i rarely ever use is getting spam mastered.

i need to set up my own mail server... and get a good domain.. hehe.
 
Yahoo pictures is also limiting access to full size photos uploaded by users. Only Yahoo members will be able to view the fullsize pics. All others will only see the thumbnails.

From their website:

Beginning on March 25, 2002:
If you are a free member of Yahoo! Photos, public visitors to your account will no longer be able to access your uploaded high-resolution picture files. Your visitors will still be able to view and enjoy your picture albums and picture pages as they do currently.

Be assured, your high-resolution images and files will not be deleted or affected in any way. As the account owner, you will still have full access to them.

You and your visitors will continue to have the ability to order high-quality prints that use the high-resolution images. You will still be able to share your pictures publicly, with other Yahoo! IDs, and via email.

If you are a free member of Yahoo! Briefcase, public access to your uploaded files will no longer be available. You will still be able to share your files with other Yahoo! IDs and via email.

You can preserve all of these features for your Photos and Briefcase account by signing up now for Premium Storage.

If you have purchased Premium storage prior to March 25, you will not be affected by these changes.

the email states yahoo still offers forwarding.. SO... what I'm thinking, is setup a free account elsewhere that supports pop3, and setup your yahoo mail to forward to that account. Other than that, the change should be invisible to friends/family.
