Yahoo Messenger crashing

For the past week on my XP system, Yahoo Messenger (the latest available version) has been crashing right after it connects. I can see my online contact list briefly before the program just closes. No error messages. None even in Event Viewer. I've tried reinstalling, but it still crashes. I've even tried uninstalling and installing Yahoo Messenger 8 (from oldversion.com), but I still get the same problem.

Incidentally, I can connect to the same yahoo account from my XP system at work with no problems.

Has anyone experienced this and offer suggestions?

I have never used Yahoo Messenger but you could try Pidgin if you don't need all the features from the official client

Have you done the hack that disables ads in the program? That one causes the program to behave erratically.

Hmm, I will defintiely have to try this. /searches google.

This may not help you, but maybe someone will see this thread and this may be useful.
I was using Yahoo IM and when I would try to do different things, mostly right clicking on the message screen, it would shut down without warning.
I FINALLY found out it was due to Windowblinds 4.5 (a Windows graphical skinning program) running.
Very odd...

Interesting. I do have a custom theme running (Code Opus). That may have something to do with it. But in any case, I ran an ad disabler batch program, and voila, Yahoo Messenger 8 doesn't crash anymore! And as a bonus, no more ads either. I need to find one that works with Yahoo Messenger 9, and I'll be set.
