Yahoo lowers their POP3 access price - now $19.99

Just got this email from Yahoo :

Important service announcement: Please act by April 24th to continue using Yahoo! Mail Forwarding or POP access.

We noticed that you have not yet subscribed to Yahoo! Mail's enhanced POP access and Mail forwarding service. You have less than two weeks to subscribe before you lose the ability to access your messages with a POP client (such as Microsoft Outlook) or to forward your mail.

Introductory Offer:
Sign up now and save 33%

Subscribe before April 24, 2002, and get the first year of service for just $19.99. That's 33% off the regular service fee of $29.99. If you subscribe after April 24, 2002, you may experience an interruption in service and the price will increase to $29.99.

I still think someone would be better off getting their own domain and either setting up your own mail server or signing up for a separate mail forwarding service. That way you have a cool personalized domain and can have unlimited e-mail addresses.

I have been doing this for a few years and would never go back to a Hotmail or Yahoo account.

Also, if you go this route, here is a tip I learned a long time ago: When you buy something online or sign up for something, use the place as the e-mail address you use, i.e. buy something at Amazon, use amazon@yourdomain.com as the e-mail. Then forward all these accounts to one address. That way, if you get spam, you can find out what site caused it, and if needed, disable that particular e-mail address.

Brad, I do exactly that and heartily recommend it to anyone considering dumping yahoo. The ability to track email leaks and arbitrarily block them is exceptionally handy. It can be eye-opening to see exactly how spammers get your address. In at least one case, I was able to detect a security breach (either a cracker or a disgruntled employee swiped their entire customer database, with email and credit card numbers) before the breached business did themselves. They weren't interested in believing me at first though.

I got my own domain from Registryfly.com for $8.95/year and they have email hosting for $15 that makes Yahoo look sick. It gives you 50 email accounts and 25 megs of storage vs. 6 megs for Yahoo.:Q

Guess great minds think alike! 😉

I do the same thing and agree I would not want to go back to not having unlimited addresses.

who would pay to use yahoo ....

After losing my college e-mail account, I opened a hotmail account. Unfortunately, I entirely use Eudora for e-mail, which it doesn't support, so I went to Yahoo. They have been offereing POP3 for free for years. This is a really bad move on their part - they'll only make money off of people who don't know any better, and those who HAVE to keep their old yahoo.com address. There are so many cheaper alternatives - just about any standard ISP offers e-mail accounts.

I was about to just reply about the "get your own .com" kind of thing, but looks like others have covered it. It sure did make a hell of a lot of sense after the cyberdomains.com deal. I now have as many pop accounts as I want PLUS a commercial .com website for less than $20 a YEAR. Why in the world would I pay $20 a MONTH for this?

whoops...guess i jumped the gun a little...sorry 'bout that!

anyway - yeah, it still doesn't make sense...please disregard my stupidity comments! lol

<< ok, I'm dumb- can someone walk me thru all the steps for my own .com, here or by PM.

thanks!
>>

kinda hard to PM you when you have not enabled PrivateMessages . sorry if I seem a little harsh but ...😉

I won't pay a penny to them as long as there are so many free services around. I use one e-mail client soft to read all my e-mail acounts including hotmail. But no success with yahoo. So basically, I am giving it up.

The idea to set up your own e-mail server is great, but if you set the server at your own PC, do you need to have it running all the day? Haven't done that before. Can linux do that? Any one can PM me the basic idea, I think I can do it myself.

ROFL when I saw the thread title! 😀

You are a much smarter man than I. I first posted this when Yahoo sent out the first wave of letters, and the mods locked it, because of an unfortunate choice of thread title.

Yahoo sucks. (No, that wasn't my thread title.) I already cancelled my POP service a couple weeks ago and moved everything to myrealbox.com. And I unchecked all the Yahoo stupid spam list stuff and deleted any possible personal info they had. I use ePrompter now to check the webmail without logging in and delete all my spam.

I might try the Web2Pop. Thanks explorer2k! I get at least 20 emails a day to my Yahoo account and don't want to take the time to switch to one of my other email accounts. I guess I am just lazy.

I don't understand something...

Can't you stay with Yahoo and not use POP access?

That is, log directly into mail.yahoo.com and not have to pay the 19.99 fee for the first year and 29.99 thereafter?

sorry - I had to turn it off a while back and forgot. It's enabled now (and I feel dumb and dumber!!) . 😱

Web2pop works great. It works a bit faster with Yahoo than Hotmail. One neat thing about using web2pop with Yahoo and Hotmail is that your emails don't have their ad messages tacked on the bottom. It's just a pure e-mail.

Web2pop Setup Instructions for Eudora:
You should use "YourAccount#hotmail.com" as your account name, and "127.0.0.1"
as you pop server. Web2pop must be running (it's not started automatically).

In Eudora 3.x it add "YourAccount#hotmail.com@127.0.0.1" in the "POP account"
field.

In Eudora 4 and above type "YourAccount#hotmail.com" in the field "Login Name"
and "127.0.0.1" in the "Server:" field.

*You can filter the 30 day left emails to the trash. 🙂

Now, only if there was a way to setup web2mail to run as a server, and not just locally.
so, youd' put "server IP" instead of having to run it locally.

For everyone else wondering about how this works:

1) Buy a Basic domain registration (Yoursite.com) at any provider ICANN accredited. I recommend Godaddy.com for their prices and service ($8.95/yr or $69.5/10yrs).

2) Use someplace like the recent Hot Deal Cyberwings.com for hosting.
They offered a nice package (Unlimited email accounts, 100mb web storage space, 50mb mail storage, ect...) for ~$3/yr.

or

1) Buy a Deluxe domain registration from a provider like Ehost.com which combines both registration and basic mail forwarding for a higher fee (~$20-$40).

I used Network Solutions and Ehost way back before I realized how much more sane it was to go with a cheaper alternative and have more control over the domain.

These solutions aren't for the novice, but since you're here at AnandTech, you're one step ahead of everyone else since you've got a natural support group on the forums. Most interfaces for setting up accounts for pop3 access, mail forwarding, filtering, ect.. are very intuitive and don't take programming skills at all.

Good call on the personalized merchant email addresses, bradolson. I started doing that recent and it's a powerful tip.

Best of luck 🙂

Yes, you can still check your email by logging into their website. I just prefer using Outlook to manage the email, addresses, and appointments. It saves a lot of time. Plus my Outlook database is around 20 megs and growing with my old mail and stuff. It's nice to be able to look back on an email I got a year ago, just in case.

So I first need to buy a Domain then have it hosted with a different company? anyone know a one stop place with a cheaparse price? And do you just setup Outlook to your new mail server? Damn I am net savvy till I do this! 😛

Also what way (application) do you filter many (or unlimited) name@yourname.com e-mails all down into one? good idea thanks in advance!

I know that it is getting a little off hot deals topic, but I am interested in how to set up my own domain/email, etc. I was wondering if this was really complicated, where I could get the information (a step by step type manual for the inexperienced), etc.
