How many people really use POP and SMTP access for mail?

I used to do it for Yahoo when it was free but then Yahoo made it some premium service. I never felt the need to use POP/SMTP after that.... can't even remember why I used it in the first place....

Well it IS pretty neat. Type it in and it brings it up automatically without having to hit enter.

Are you still on dial-up to worry about being offline? That's old.

Being a uni student, I have to get files and mails at various places on different pc's and I can't just configure outlook or some other mail client on each of them. Internet access for email is best for my particular needs.

I don't stay at uni at all times...... Group work at non-uni places also requires internet email access. MS Exchange, even if it was installed, would be useless at those places. Overall, as far as I am concerned, Internet email provides me much more freedom than POP access would at a few selective places. Home access might be okay with it but I am too used to using Internet email by now to even consider it very seriously. There is also the aspect of re-installing my OS frequently and backing up and restoring the emails from any email client would be a serious pain.
