Why would anyone pay for email, let alone Yahoo's? Just go with Gmail.

Yeah my last email on the phone is from 4/14, but I use mine for VFW stuff and those guys are always sending tons of emails.

I'm still getting mail on the phone and while I haven't synced the desktop recently, had no problem there yet.

They've tried this before, after a year or so of dwindling use numbers they added it back free. Can't see this sticking as a lasting change with the 2 largest competitors having a free pop service.

It's still free in the UK. Perhaps because of the BT/Yahoo partnership?

Their POP server access has had intermittent problems for ages though. It seems to me that if one receives a mail with a certain size attachment (relative to one's broadband speed), their POP server throws a hissy fit and terminates the connection during the download. This causes some Microsoft mail clients to repeatedly download the same mail and none received since then.

Bingo.
Yahoo has no leverage in the market. They dont dictate terms.

Yahoo axed the free public chat rooms years ago. That was the only thing from them that I used. Their email sucks. Lots of advertisements, lots of spam, very slow. I'm not surprised if they axe that as a free service as well. My wife uses yahoo mail. I use gmail.

Yeah... my wife uses Yahoo Mail as well since she had an SBC/AT&T DSL account that included it.

She ditched the DSL years ago, but kept the e-mail address.

I can't believe people would actually consider paying for yahoo mail. There are plenty of ways of getting email for free, including pop-mail etc.

I never get spam and Adblock takes care of the rest.

My bitch is their old layout was so much better. They changed it a couple months ago for no damn reason.

Try synching your desktop mail, please. Its been about 10 days that I haven't been able to get external POP mail through Yahoo. First several days, I just chalked it up to a Yahoo problem, server down, replacement, or something. I started getting curious yesterday when it had been more than a week. I was able to get my other email using another (locally installed) POP client, so its working fine on the other end.

Why does it have to be POP? Why not use IMAP?
Because neither Yahoo nor my other mail account support it? I use the web-based client, anyway, so its not like I'm downloading messages locally to three different computers.

I'm using IMAP with Yahoo. I use a client, but that shouldn't matter.

To clarify, its not my Yahoo mail that I am unable to access through POP, but an 'external' non-Yahoo email account that I have been using with the Yahoo account.

If I had Yahoo mail, I'd pay if it meant I could get the features I wanted.

If Gmail started charging $100 a year, I'd pay it without much thought. Switching email addresses would be a huge pain in the neck.

And Gmail is ditching Exchange support for standard accounts (per-user licensing with Microsoft).

Shhh! Dammit, man! Don't give them any ideas!

POP? What is this, 2002?

The alternatives being "trust the free e-mail provider to store my e-mail safely forever and use crappy webmail" and "trust the e-mail provider to store my e-mail safely forever and use IMAP"? I think I'll use POP, e-mail software of my choice and set up the way I want it, and store the e-mail safely myself.

I don't understand what you're saying here. All of my mail is backed up by me, with a redundant copy on the mail server. I'll agree trusting third parties is a bad idea on a few levels, but if you aren't running your own mail server, POP and IMAP are equivalent for mail safety.
