That banner isn't worth a FREE domain. I took a half-hearted look at the TOC and did not see anything mentioning a banner.

so, what i see on the page offering the domain name, referring to the banner:

Domain Forwarding
If you already own a web site, our forwarding tool lets you point your new domain name to your existing site. This way, when web surfers type in www.your-new-domain.com, they'll automatically see your existing web site. Using domain forwarding is handy when you own multiple domain names and want to point them all to the same web site. You can also choose to use the masked forwarding option that includes a Yahoo! banner ad.

Bonus Starter Web Page
When you register a domain name, you'll also get a bonus starter web page that can serve as a placeholder until you are ready to build a web site. Customize the page by selecting one of our pre-designed templates and adding your text content and contact information. Because the starter web page is not a full web site, you won't be able to alter these templates, add pages or include your own graphics. It also includes a Yahoo! banner ad at the top of the page for Domain-only plans. Here's a sample.

The banner is only there if you do a masked forward. If you do a standard domain forward, or just point it at your own nameservers, you are not supposed to get that banner.

Psst it helps if you get web hosting and use THEIR name servers then those annoying banner ads will magically disappear.

Remember people you need TWO things domain + web hosting.

I need just domain, because besides web, I want to do many other stuff like nntp, sftp, smtp, and so on. I could find a free name service. If so, will the banner be?

I have several domains registered through Yahoo on the cheap. You simply use your own nameservers and your own webhosting and you would never know you had a Yahoo domain (no banners, etc). After six months ( I think if I remember right) you can transfer the domains to GoDaddy or whoever.

It's a great deal, minimal hassle, don't listen to the naysayers here. Great find OP.

a lot of reasons. mainly to get away from Yahoo and in that case transferring almost anywhere else is helpful. Then you don't have to have a banner on a cloaked redirect, you can use the email forwarders provided by other dns services easily, and when you renew in a year or 5 years you don't pay Yahoo's steep fees.

Godaddy is just an example of a domain registrar that offers better service and features than Yahoo domains. So by taking up this deal you get the killer price of $1.99 registration for up to 5 years from Yahoo, and then transfer the domain to get the better features elsewhere (you retain the domain for the 5 years or however long you paid for at Yahoo).

Price is up to 4.99.

I think it is a referral. Clear your cookies and click on the Domain Names link on the main page and it's 9.98.

Yep price is back up to $4.98/yr which is still very cheap.

That's all I'm going to say :)

I think ECartman hit on the real deal...

Register w/Yahoo for 5 years -- THEN -- transfer it to someone else like godaddy or namecheap.
Lock in the price of Yahoo -- and move the term to a better registrar

I didn't think of that in time to get in on the 1.99 deal, so I missed it. It's still *warm* at $4.99 to do the same thing.

I don't think you can transfer a domain to another registrar without buying at least one more year from them - which is $8 or so right now with GoDaddy - almost the cost I paid for 5 years with Yahoo!

It would be better to just wait for a deal to come along on transfers from Godaddy.. You apparently have to wait for 60 days at least to transfer anyway

the only way a $4.99 registration would be a bad choice is if you coudn't tranfer it out...which you can with domains purchase through yahoo.
