YAHL2T: Lowering Textures/etc OUTSIDE of HL2?

My HL2 keeps crashing when I try to lower any settings aside from the default for my laptop(Toshiba A45-1202)... It runs nicely on this crappy Intel Extreme Graphics card(20-60fps) but I want to lower textures to raise the average FPS. I get "memory could not be read" errors if I try to change it within the game. I also get the same errors whenever I get between levels(crashes right after "loading"), but at least the autosaves work so I can resume easily
 
go to steampowered.com and check the news page. there's link on there you can click to validate hl2 and check your games cache files. sounds like something might be corrupted.
