YAHDTVT: Avia or Digital Video Essentials?

It depends...both work very well, but Avia has some extra test patterns that are good if you have access to the advanced service menus in your TV. If you've never messed with those settings, my advice to you is to get DVE (it's cheaper, but just fine), and if you're still unhappy with the results, have the TV professionally calibrated by an ISF tech.

I have Avia and DVE. I think the interface of DVE is better and the explanations are easier to understand.

Not to mention that DVE is cheaper.

Any point in trying to mess with the advanced service menus?

sure, if you know what you're doing. It can definitely help the PQ if you adjust them properly, but if you mess them up, it can also screw up your PQ pretty bad, also.
What kind of TV do you have?

Samsung HCN4226W.

Just hooked it up yesterday, hence the zillions of questions. 😱

oh ok...well the reason I ask is, an ISF calibration is usually $250-300...so it may not be worth it for a $1500 TV
