I've always thought AK47s are bad ass. I've seen them many places for around 300 dollars. Where would be a good gun retailer that has your basic, traditional AK47 for around that price.

I'm also wondering if there are any WWII era guns that are in that price range. An M1 Garand would be sweet but im sure you would have to pay through the nose.

Also, any other cool guns under 500 dollars that im not hitting on... suggest!

The vast majority of the Russian surplus guns are in really good shape. 7.62x54r ammunition is still made (Wolf, Winchester, etc...) and there is still a lot of quality military surplus ammo from eastern europe on the market (usually corrosive though).

Spend the money and build yourself an AR or buy a real AK clone if you want something that will last.

The Romanian AKs aren't terrible for the price, though they sometimes need a little work.

I had to dump a Red Star Arms trigger group into mine because of some wicked trigger slap. The previous owner sold it to me for $200 so I still came out ahead.

Thanks for the info, will look into it.

By the way, I noticed today that the 2nd largest AR manufacturer is located only about 2 hours from here. Would there be any advantages to direct factory access in acquiring one? I wouldn't think so but maybe someone has heard of experiences like that. I suppose, at most, you'd save on shipping.

Probably not, since you will most likely still have to go through a seperate FFL to get the rifle.

If you can get a cheap lower reciever from there or elsewhere, then the rest of the rifle you can have shipped to your door. $200-ish for the lower and thats the only thing that is considered a firearm. Then you can buy the complete upper of your choice and you are in business. You can get very nice used AR-15 upper recievers from the buy/sell section of AR-15.com. If you buy new, they are also inexpensive for the most part.

What would you estimate a "custom built" AR with the basic configuration cost? That sounds like it could be a fun project.

I'm fairly interested in a Nagant, simply because they are the kind of gun i was interested and they are terribly cheap. Do the bores usually need some work? What are some of the common problems associated with them?

$650-ish if you shop around.

As I said, the only thing you have to buy as a "firearm" is the lower reciever. Everything else can be shipped right to you via USPS, UPS, or whatever.

You can get even lower than that if you get a used upper (nothing wrong with that, I have bought used uppers from AR-15.com several times, and all have been great). If you go used you can get that closer to $600.

Beats the $850+ pricetags you will see on basic AR's in a lot of fun stores.

I used to shoot some of them fairly often. My old house was 5 minutes from a private rifle club I belonged to.

I haven't done much shooting in the last two years since I had to move to Chicago. They don't like guns here.

I bought a nice M44 about a month ago but haven't shot it yet because I haven't had the headspace checked. No one around here seems to do it except for one shop, who is a mom-and-pop operation with very inconvenient times. How many have you seen with incorrect headspace?

On AR15.com most people are saying that the guns are pretty much new, mostly Doublestar lowers with new internals and barrels. I haven't read any complaints, especially at the price. Certainly not junk with any part.

On the M44, if your bolt and receiver numbers match (even if electropenciled) you should be good to go. However, I figure spending the money on gauges or having it checked is worth the peace of mind for saving your eyesight/hands. And there are plenty of surplus rifles that shoot 762x54r so you could use them again in the future.

You might want to actually consider how well a gun shoots before you worry about how cool it looks.

I mean unless of course you are just some lame ass poser who only wants one so he can take pictures of himself being badass with the gun and post them on the Internet so that everyone will think "OMG he is teh koolnez!"
