I've seen an enfield in a lgs for $175. It was missing some stuff, but it was gone in less than an hour of it being put on the floor.

and that's about twice what the mosin is going to cost, plus it's not even a complete Enfield...you'll have to pay money to replace the missing parts.

If you value your shoulder blade don't buy a MN carbine. 😱

I don't think I've ever seen a Mosin use anything but 7.62x54R

My buddy once accidentally chambered and fired a .308 out of his MN. The rifle fired and even hit the bullseye just fine. He only noticed something was wrong because the report of the shot was quieter than expected, and he broke the case trying to extract it. 😀

Yes, pull straight back on the bolt while pulling the trigger. it should slide right out.

Try shining a light from one end of the bore and looking through the muzzle end. It won't tell you much, but the rifling should be easily visible. The bore will probably be dark with corrosion, but with some hoppes #9 it will come out after a while.

I don't think it was mentioned yet, but remember that nearly all ammo you shoot will be milsurp and corrosive, so you will need to clean the gun almost immediately after shooting in order to preserve the bore.

coool, i will go check it out. i never use anything but hoppes. people have been saying windex works, but that reminds of "my big fat greek wedding"

I've had all 3 mosins (M91/30 M44, M38) and have shot one Mauser. The Mosin is a tank and the ammo is cheaper than the Mauser but the bolt-action is very clunky and is crap compared to the Mauser. The Ironsights are also crap compared to a Mauser. Do it depends on what you want to do with it.

I have one and enjoy shooting it. I had an old HP Laserjet 4 that I put out of it's misery with my Mosin. 🙂 They sure can do a number on your shoulder after a while.

'03 Springfields kick like mules too! After about 20 shots, I'm ready to shoot something gas or spring recoiled. My shoulder doesn't make for a reliable buffer. lol

mostly just shooting whenever i get the chance i heard the iron sights are off, unless you shoot with the bayonet on and you can make the bolt work just as good as a mauser. also an emergency weapon incase ze germans invade and i am forced to fight them off in a snowed in city while making love to a german translator and become the most famous person at defending my homeland.

so the general attitude is mosin > marlin .22

i don't think thats the case. they are 2 completely different rifles. the .22 is going to cost you less in the long run and you can shoot longer without pain.

You can get a sling through Amazon, if you want one.

That's where I got mine. You can also get a scope rail through Amazon as well. Be sure to get a longer type scope because the scope rail mounts a little far forward because of the bolt lever.

i went to check out the mosin at big 5 sporting goods....the outside looked like it was in decent condition but the manager working there wouldnt let me take apart the bolt to look down the bore. from what i could tell there was a lot of gunk on the bore...like dirty oily stuff. and there were some rust pits that i could see. i kinda decided it wasnt worth it. the rifling was still decently strong from the looks of it...but there was a decent amount of rust that i dont want to try and fix.

edit. i should also note that the rust wasnt just in the bore, it was on the muzzle of the gun as well. it was made in 1939 and the factory marking was a star with an arrow in the middle.....that looked like this.

That's a stamp from the Tula factory if I'm not mistaken.

you are correct, that is a tula marking. Usually cost about 20 dollars more than their izhevsk brethren.

Too bad about the rifle. Go figure that big 5 would let the condition go to hell. Any visible pitting is a bad thing.

yeah thats what it said on 7.62x54r.net. is that good? i may still go back tomorrow and buy it before work. im just concerned about all the rust i saw. ive never seen it so bad out of all the stuff ive seen online

Tula is regarded to be the better factory over the several different factories that put them out. I'd shy away from one with visible pitting though. Did they have any others or just one?

He wouldn't let you look down the barrel? Screw him, I wouldn't buy it even if it looked good at that point, sounds like a dick that doesn't deserve business.

there was only one on sale for $99.99. the others they had were all their retail price which was $179.99. which is probably why it was on sale, also it was pretty rust colored around the feed ramp and where the bolt slides in and out, and it came off when i rubbed it with my finger. could that be just oil?

I might have another look at it tomorrow though, maybe I could talk the guy into letting me take the bolt off and really check out the bore. He said it was illegal for him to take the trigger lock off, which I think is not true because i've never seen a trigger lock on any of the guns in the gun store down the street.

That rifle sounds like shit. Rust coming off the feed ramp? Stay away from that POS

yeh, not sure if it was rust, or oil the color of rust. but yeah it was defintely a little discolored. and felt a little rough when i rubbed my finger on it

cosmoline has a distinct reddish/orange color, so it is possible it was just the stock cosmo. It is extremely thick and very oily.

Big 5's national ad says that they have mosin nagan 91/30 for 99.99, so its possible they only have one.

I'm not sure what state you're in, but I don't think there is any law against trigger locks. They keep them trigger locked while on the rack, but when showing a customer typically remove them, otherwise you'd have no idea how the trigger felt (which is significant for a buyer). I'd call the bluff of the guy and be stern.

yeah there is no trigger lock law here....none of the gun shops ive been too have them. dicks and sports authority dont have one either, although they keep them locked on the racks. I'll go back tomorrow and take another look. It must have been the cosmoline that rubbed off on me then, but when I was rubbing it it didnt come off like it should have if it was oil
