YAGunT...compact 9mm-.40: Kel-Tec, Kahr, Glock?

jlee

Lifer
It's almost time for me to pick up a handgun -- considering Glock, Kahr, and Kel-Tec...thought about the Walther PPK/S (my dad used to have one), but I'm not too keen on .380s.

I've thought about a Kel-Tec P32-AT .32; it's tiny, and concealing it wouldn't be a problem. However, I'd prefer at least a 9mm..possibly a .40. I'm looking to spend no more than $600 (with at least two magazines), and I don't mind buying used. High magazine capacity (over 10) is a plus, but definitely not required due to the size I'm looking at.

Accuracy is also a plus, since I may be carrying it as a backup eventually (after I graduate and get my LEO certification)..though hopefully by then I'll have a few to choose from.

I'm 6' 140lb, so I don't have a whole lot of room to conceal a larger firearm..hence 'compact.' 😉 Recommendations on holsters would be great as well.

So - fellow 'gun nuts'..recommendations? I'm about to look around packing.org and see what I can find there..

My dad has a 239 .357sig with houge grips and its a good shooting gun.... A little bit of a handful with that .357sig in such a small frame 😀

Loud as well. If you are going to use a weapon like that for carry you should at least once hear it fired indoors without ear protection. I have seen people drop thier weapon and just stand thier stupified upon 1st using it without hearing protection.

I'm not afraid of recoil (I've been shooting since I was ~9yo..blasting away with a .38 special.. 😛), but I probably wouldn't practice enough if I had a lightweight .45 or .357mag..

I'll look at th Sig 239..thanks

Just requested my Florida CCW application.. 🙂

I like Glocks, but I don't know if I would carry one every day because it doesn't have a separate mechanical safety in the traditional sense.

It won't fire unless you pull the trigger. It has a safety on the trigger that requires a direct pull and it can't be pulled by a snag or anything like that. I've tried for hours to get my safety to release at an angle and it won't do it. Tons of Police Officers carry Glocks, and I've never heard of a problem with it not having a seperate mechanical safety. I understand your point, but with a proven holster it simply isn't a problem.

Go look at a Glock 27(I have one) it is plenty small enough to carry concealed, and you can add a +1 grip that adds another round and makes it have a much better grip for your pinky. I'd also look at the smaller .40 Glock as well -- bigger round but less capacity.

Yeah, they can certainly be loud, but I find rifles to be much louder than any handgun. I shoot at an outdoor range and I was walking to sign in when someone was firing a rifle at the range 30 ft away. It was loud enough to startle me.

The county Sheriff's Office issues Glocks (probably .40) ..the city PD uses H&K USP .40s..

I'll have to find someone with various guns that I can try out..maybe a trip to a local range is in order. I'm spoiled..I can practice in my backyard 😉

Kahr's are generally awesome guns, as are kimbers actually. I personally don't like small glocks, i think they feel like little bricks in my hand. I'm not a fan of kel-tec's at all, but it may be personal bias.

You might seriously want to consider the Taurus Millenium Pro pt140. I just got one for christmas and I'm EXTREMELY happy with it. Insane accuracy, and about the best feeling gun I've held in this size range. I got it, an extra magazine, and a new cleaning/care kit for $437 with tax and all.

You must be around idiots. Of course it is going to be loud. Fvck, a .22 is loud if you fire it indoors without hearing protection.

Yea anyone who drops a handgun because It was loud doesnt need to be shooting in the first place.

Just read that you asked about holsters as well. Have it made. There are almost always quality leathersmiths around. If you need recommendations I'll put you onto the guy who makes mine, they're top quality and very affordable.

I recommend the Browning Hi-Power MKIII. Comes in two versions: 9mm or .40 S&W, its an awesome gun and shoots like none other.

I'd chose a Glock over a Taurus. My .02. I've shot a bunch of different Glocks and own a Glock 17. I don't think I've ever had a jam or misfire with mine in the 10 years I've owned it.

I love full size glocks. My duty weapon has always been a glock 22 in .40. I've never fired anything to compare. But I do not like small glocks. The grips are far to square and fat for me in the compact and subcompact ranges. There's also the issue of thickness...I believe the taurus is thinner (especially in the grip), which makes it easier to conceal. Not to mention he put a cap of $600 on the purchase, and glocks are going to push that envelope...or at least they used to.

I have nothing against glocks, they're just not right for me for concealed carry...and if he's 140 at 6', he's probably pretty small handed.

Have you ruled out a revolver as a back up weapon?

Also, I strongly encourage you to avoid a .380 or a 9mm, they just don't have the knockdown power you want.

I've never been much of a revolver fan..not really sure why.

The Kahr K40 and Sig P239 look pretty nice -- I'll have to shop around and see how they fit my hand.

I'd like a small double action revolver, dirt simple and light, something small enough for an ankle holster. My CC weapon is an aluminum framed Taurus revolver.

If you're going into LE, you'll have half a dozen handguns in a couple of years anyway😉

The Hi-Powers are excellent guns (especially in .40), but they might be a little large for him in a CC role.
