YAGunT: Anyone with a Marlin 795?

Want a dirt cheap .22lr to shoot dirt cheap .22lr. Don't really want to cough up the price of a 10/22, anyone with a 795 care to chime in?


Also, can anyone recommend a cheaper .22lr pistol? (sub-250)

I have a Model 60 which is the same action as the 795 just with a tube feed magazine. Great gun, very reliable. Can be tricky to break down and reassemble (if you aren't careful it's easy to kink the recoil spring) but it doesn't really need cleaning more than 2 or 3 times a year.

If you have pawn shops in your area that sell used guns I'd check them out for a used Model 60. A lot of times you can find great deals on them.

We do have pawn shops but i've had very bad luck at them. Often times the prices are higher than a consignment gun shop.

I will say the Phoenix HP22 is an awesome cheap pistol, for around $150 you can get the range kit which has the short and long barrel as well as 2 magazines...and they have a lifetime warranty (mine the mag catch wore down after 10 years and I just mailed it to them and they fixed it and shipped back to me in less than 2 weeks)

I have a Model 795 and it's a great little rifle. If you're looking for 100-rd drums or the like, you won't find it, I think the largest magazine anyone makes for the rifle is the little 10-rd stick. Don't expect to heavily customize, since there isn't a lot of after market support for it. The only thing that wasn't straight from the factory on mine are the tech-sights I bought for it.

Don't think they make those for the 795, may be wrong... and it seems like hi-cap .22 magazines always have feeding issues because of the rimmed cases. Besides, for heavy shooting with a tube feed all you need is this. 😉

Missed the pistol question earlier... The basic models of the Ruger MkIII can be had for $250-300. I'd really recommend saving a few extra bucks for one of them. The vast majority of the cheaper .22 pistols are, well, cheaply made and have a limited life.

If you want mag fed with "more options" then you should really just pony up for the 10/22. From what I understand the 795 is a great gun, but lacks the aftermarket support of the Perennial Powerhouse of Plinkitude, which makes it worth the cost of admission, in my opinion.

Stores have specials on them all the time. Hell, WalMart out here carries them!

In the end I decided to skip it. Felt too cheap and flimsy when I went to check it out. I'm gonna shop the local pawn shops and such for an older "more sturdy" model 22LR.

I know I should really pony up for the 10/22 I am just a mega cheap ass. I think they are over priced too =\

Do you want the aftermarket? I enjoy my remington 597. I like the fact that it has 2 guide rods instead of 2 and you don't need to do little mods right out of the box.

If you ever think you want to go aftermarket though, just get teh 10/22. Only mods to mine have been a valquartsen hammer and I love it. Outshoots 3 10/22's owned by friends before they shoved more money at theirs.

Granted, small sample size.

the only aftermarket i want is a decent mag capacity and decent cheap scope compatibility. it's a .22 so I don't need a $400 nikon on it or something...

I'm in California, so I have no experience with the aftermarket mags. I know there are 30 rounders for the 597 and plenty for the 10/22 as well. Although apparently only the tactical solutions are reliable (and they are expensive).

Otherwise, the remington will take a cheap weaver rail and some rings. I recommend the meuller apv for a cheap scope, btw.

Yeah you really do need to just take the 10/22...maybe find one at a pawn shop...unless you have an ar15 and just buy a conversion kit I don't think anything else will fit the bill

i've got a couple glocks...but they are gen4's and they don't make a .22 conversion for gen4s =[ I was thinking about trading for a gen3 and buying a conversion.
