YAGunT: 9mm HollowPoints from Walmart

JEDI

Lifer
Walmart has Federal Hi-Shok JHP (50 for $16) and Remington UMC JHP (100 for $28).

What do you think of either of them in your CCW gun?

I would not carry either of those.

Gold Dot +p is all I will use. Saving $4 is not worth ammo failing when its needed.

Nice for training.

Buy some Federal HST for home defense.

I use umc for bulk practice, but Speer gold dot short barrel loads for my sub compacts for protection and occasional practice.

Speer Gold Dot.
Used to carry Hydra Shoks.

Recommend you use something better than Hi-shok's if your life depends on it.

Meh, I'd feel perfectly fine with them. I typically use cheaper self defense rounds because I fire them frequently. Gotta make sure that they function fine in your weapon, and I don't like ammo sitting in mags for lengthy times. Also, if you chamber/unchanged rounds you'll have issues with bullet set back.

Proper care and training with ammo is way more important than what type.

Hi shock is plenty fine in its reviews and at that price it would be easier to practice with a few hundred rounds.

Mine is loaded with Hornady TAP right now, simply because it was the best HP ammo the store had on hand when I got my SIG. I'd rather go with Speer Gold Dot or Federal HST.

This is from Dr. Gary Roberts, one of the most prominent and well respected ballisticians in the country.

The following loads all demonstrate outstanding terminal performance and can be considered acceptable for duty/self-defense use:

9 mm:
Barnes XPB 105 & 115 gr JHP (copper bullet)
Federal Tactical 124 gr JHP (LE9T1)
Speer Gold Dot 124 gr +P JHP (53617)
Winchester Ranger-T 124 gr +P JHP (RA9124TP)
Winchester Partition Gold 124 gr JHP (RA91P)
Winchester Ranger-T 127 gr +P+ JHP (RA9TA)
Federal Tactical 135 gr +P JHP (LE9T5)
Federal HST 147 gr JHP (P9HST2)
Remington Golden Saber 147 gr JHP (GS9MMC)
Speer Gold Dot 147 gr JHP (53619)
Winchester Ranger-T 147 gr JHP (RA9T)

I have Hi-Shoks in my PPS 9mm right now because that's all Walmart had at the time. I plan on getting some Speer Gold Dot or Golden Sabers, or the like, but until then I'm fine with what I have.

For range fodder sure but not for carry. Gold Dots, HST"s, or Ranger T's would all be good to go. My prefered personal carry is HST's, particularly during the colder months. GD's tend to get clogged in heavy clothing.

Why would you shoot JHP's at the range?

I buy cheap FMJ from Walmart because a) it's cheap and b) shit ammo is a decent test for the firearm. I don't see the point in spending even the meager extra five bucks (assuming Federal Craptastics are $11 a box where you are, too) unless you're going somewhere where you intend to shoot stuff other than paper (melons, containers full of water, dishwashers...whatever).

If the idea is 'I want to make sure my handgun fires hollowpoints reliably,' I don't think that's an effective test. Fire what you intend to carry, and when you're satisfied that it will feed, put it aside and use the cheap FMJ for the range.

Although I'd never even carry a gun that I felt was picky with ammo.

This.

Honestly I find wal-mart ammo to jam. Would not use any of it for CCW.

See last line of post above yours.

What kind of jams do you get with Wallyworld ammo?

With some special exceptions*, I honestly don't think I've ever had a jam (failure to eject casing or failure to load next round) in anything. Just the very occasional dud primer.

*.22 mag-fed pistols are the most prominent in my mind. How is a rimmed cartridge ever supposed to feed reliably like that?

This is my girl that is still in jail for the next 8 days....8 long days! I have heard crappy Federal is fine for the range.....?

Yes, federal is fine for the range. I've shot a ton if that Walmart ammo and never had a problem.

Its not ammo, but I'm fairly sure the same thing applies. Online ammo almost never fails to cycle, and wally ammo has like a 3% fail rate for WWB and federal. Federal > WWB though.

Some guns like some ammo better than others. I've shot tons of the Federal .40 through my Glock's and Sig. I've shot a good bit of the 9mm as well. No problems. I've either shot or been with friends shooting it more than I care to count the $$$ worth. It functions perfectly fine and is accurate as well. It's not the ammo.

You shoot jhp's at the range because that's the ammo that you are depending on. You should shoot a lot of your self defense ammo to be sure that it functions reliably and that you are proficient with the ammo/gun combo.

The FMJ junk is just for practice and plinking. It's fine to shoot that stuff often, but you cannot neglect your chosen self defense ammo at the range, imo.
