YAGT: White Men Stockpile Guns for the Obvious Reasons

It's only Scientific American, so of course the data will be dismissed, but if you care to see the article:

SA said:
Research suggests it's largely because they're anxious about their ability to protect their families, insecure about their place in the job market and beset by racial fears

Three percent of the population now owns half of the country’s firearms, says a recent, definitive study from the Injury Control Research Center at Harvard University.

On the whole Anxious, Insecure, Racists stockpile guns. Do I have to mention they're primarily white men, or is that obvious?

So I guess it's true. Mental health really is the problem here. I hope we can address it for these fucking dildos.

At least they're not stockpiling rental cars and cigarettes - the true scourges of American society.

Oh snap! It’s going to be a second hand slaughter!

Multiple studies have shown that conservatism is a mindset rooted in insecurity and fear, so I guess it makes sense that guns make these people feel 'safer' and more secure.

According to the article 3% of the population is stockpiling guns, and it's some percentage of that 3% who are white and do it for those reasons. So it would seem to be some very small percentage of white men stockpile guns for some of those reasons. And some of those reasons are scary. But, all in all, certainly not as click baity as the title suggests.

That and penis envy.

The problem I have with this is it doesn't really apply to those who have been hunting before they were even thinking about girls, or those with plus sized genitalia. Does a taste for elk somehow convey a form of sexual insecurity? The desire to protect one's family is powerful motivation, no argument there, although I refuse to believe it is somehow unique to Caucasians.

Having said that, there is definitely a crowd out there that unnerves me when it comes to guns. There does seem to be a sexual undertone but not the one you are suggesting (IMO). In my experience and reading, it's the guys who hit women and the perpetually celibate that we need to worry about.

Do you think hunters hoard guns? Or just get what they need to actually hunt?

Depends on how hoarding is defined. Some of my family is way into hunting, and they have a wide variety of different guns for different game.

Little .22s rifles for varmint and target shooting, up to cannons for moose and even bison.
Same with shotguns.

What they don't have is a bunch of military wannabe equipment and walk around open carrying unless they are in the country actually hunting.

Those are for the nutjobs, hackers and all around gun dorks. They've hunted for decades, shot all sorts of shit, and never used an AR-15 or other wannabe tough guy crap.

It's that other crowd who's out of control and fucking things up for everybody.

The same studies that show white = conservative.

^ Its almost funny how assured some people are in their delusions that simple logic is completely alien to them. Example just above.

Explains a lot of the delusional manure running through this sewer of a subforum though.

Depends on the hunter as weIl as your definition of hoarding. I know several who have inherited many family heirlooms in addition to what they own themselves, I'm sure it would qualify as hoarding by some. My father was a classic Winchester collector, used only one or two for actual hunting but owned nearly one of each model year. He considered them Americana that should be preserved. On the other end of the spectrum was a neighbor in Maine who owned only a Savage rifle and Remington 870 shotgun, was very proud of keeping his semi-annual hunting hobby low cost and low maintenance.

I really don't think hoarding is the flag some want it to be. Violence against women most certainly is, which is why in addition to comprehensive background checks for all purchases and the use of the Baker Act, I'm in favor of removing firearms from any man or woman with a history of domestic violence. If you are in the habit of violently assaulting people, not in self-defense, you shouldn't have firearms in your possession.

Hey, if you didn't understand the study or why I posted the link it's nothing to be ashamed of.

There's something to that. I think the popularity of hunting has declined somewhat from years ago so inheritance concentrates guns into the hands of those who still hunt. I owned 5 shotguns at one point- my own, two that were my brother's, my father's & my grandfather's as well. They're now in the hands of the only near family member who still hunts & he already had guns of his own. My grandfather's model 10 Remington is 90 years old & still functions perfectly.

Agreed. The guns in my family were about hunting, not self defense, & not macho boy toy fashion accessories, either.

If I were in the gun buying game, i think I'd have a large collection of guns too. It's like those weirdos with watches or motorcycles or magic the gathering cards.
some of that stuff is just kinda cool.

I wouldn't worry about gun hoarders.
Its the ammo aficionados you should worry about.
