I am thinking about picking up the XD mainly because it seems to be almost $100.00 cheaper than the Glock 19 but I am confused by so many different flavors of the XD series...

Which of them will be the closest in function/size to the G19?

Also, which SW M&P is equivalent to the Glock 19? The M&P series confuses me as well?

...the compacts?

M&P is the next one up from the Shield. Lemme look at the XD's...

it's cheaper than the glock because it feels like a plastic toy.

They're...all plastic?

The XD is actually a chunky motherfucker. Heavier than the Glock. But they, like S&W, discovered this whole 'ergonomics' thing. Glock is one of those companies that would build a chair for people with knees that bent the wrong way. Then they'd break your knees and declare it perfect.

I also like the triggers on both of the others over the Glock. They both feel crisp. I know one is shorter than the other but can't remember which. Wanna say the XD is the short one.

OP, just our of curiosity, is this for carry?

Yeah,
I am thinking about having a "universal" gun. That feels great on a range and it is not too tricky to control but it is also not too cumbersome to cc. I've handled G19 before and size-wise its is about "perfect" for a compromise.

XDm broski. I was going to buy one or the other. Had them both side by side.

The safety features on the XDm are legit cool. The grip is different as is the spring. The sights are nice. Overall I went with the glock for simplicity but both were nice guns.

I like the XD-M.

I really like them all, XD, Glock, S&W...they're all fun to shoot and have their own strengths. I do have a soft spot for Glocks though. They're just raw. Nothing fancy, just the basics. Love 'em!

As for an all around gun, check out the XDm series. The XDm 45 ACP 3.8" specifically is great for carry or just general purpose. A 9mm version is also available.

The XD/XDm 3.8 compacts are closest in size to the G19. If you wanna talk about "plastic toys" though, the Glock is more so than the XD. Stock Glocks use polymer magazines and guide rods, whereas the XDs' are stainless steel. Any XD counterpart to a Glock will weigh at least 6oz more.

I don't think they're too heavy all the same...my SIG Pro weighs just as much and I carry that, but it has more bulk which makes a difference. After all this madness dies down I plan to pick up one of the XDm compacts, perfect size for my hand.

But, here is the kicker though:
the barrel length on the XD service and the G19 is the same: 4in, so length wise both XD Service and the 19 seem to be identical?
Shit, I am confused!

There should be specs for barrel length and overall length.

If in doubt, I say buy small. You can always buy an extended mag if you find the grip lacking, and essentially have the frame that's the next size up. You just have a little less barrel.

look at the grip length. I have the XD service and it has a full size grip, it's not a great concealable firearm. The sub-compacts have the shorter grip with the ability to get pinky extension on the mag.

I have the M&Pc as well, quite a bit narrower grip than the XD although I'm comparing a 9mm double stack with a 45 doublestack. I love both of them and shoot them both about evenly, but I much prefer carrying the M&P for obvious reasons.

Probably the most annoying part of Springfield's XD marketing is that they bury the specifications. The G19 is 6.85" long while the XD is 7.3". The XDm comp. is much closer at 7". And yeah, grip height makes a huge difference--there's almost a full inch more height on the service XD than the G19.

And carefully look at the XDm vs normal XD. I have a few friends who have bought the "match" XD and have ultimately not seen the benefit over spending the extra $100+ for the match barrel and other differences.

So, XDM or M&Pc...

Do these come with double stacks too the way the G19 does?

If you look at the manufacturers sites you should be able to get the specs. Of the top of my head I'd say the XDm 3.8 is closest but I'm not sure.

Both are double stacks. M&Pc will hold IIRC 12 9mm or 8 .45. depending on the xdm they can hold up to 19 or so 9mm rounds.

OK, it seems that the XDm 3.8 is slightly (by.2in) bigger than the G19
the XDm 3.8 compact is slightly smaller

All of the XDm pistols come with the XD "gear" package with extra goodies like case magazines, loader, holster, cable lock, bore cleaner, etc, etc

Cheapest that I was able to find the XDm 3.8 , is here:

But OOS at the moment.

Btw, Hickock also likes the Ruger SR9C:

After viewing Hickocks videos I actually might go ahead and pickup a Ruger SR9C
Seems like a good weapon. Definitely comparable to G19 with a very light trigger that Hickock loves.
Found it for $397.00
http://grabagun.com/ruger-sr9c-cmpct-9mm-black-poly-10-1.html

Seems very comparable to G19!

The ruger is a pretty good gun but it's not a Glock. My biggest issue with it as a carry gun is it has way to many safeties and the magazine disconnect is also a non-starter. When considering a firearm you are likely to own for years if not decades spend the extra $100 if it's what you want. Personally I would go with the Glock 19 or M&P. The XD compact is almost the exact same size as the G19. XD's are also solid guns, again just don't like the safeties on a carry gun.

The polymer glocks and sigs I've fired felt better than the springfields, as if the grade of plastic used were higher quality.

It depends on the gun but yes, most of the better combat pistols have extended mags which also extend the grips.
