Im in the market for a handgun.

I was looking for some advice on a good one.

The ones i was currently looking at is the Sig P229, SW M&P, Glock 23.

1. I live in Cali. - if it means anything.. we have crap gun laws here, so it has to be legal to purchase from gun store after i apply for a permit.

2. I prefer the 9mm. Because its easier to shoot and ammo is cheap, from what ive been playing with. But i understand people here are smarter then my friends who think they know it all, so i want to hear everyone's opinion.

3. The gun should be fairly easy to handle

No... i dont want a .50 cal desert eagle... i am seriously looking for something for me, and not something to hang on the wall.

TIA

9mm? Sig 229 is a fantastic choice, and a glock 19 would also be a great choice. I own both (my 229 is in .40 S&W though), and I do like the feel of the sig a bit better, but it is heavier and thicker than the glock 19 so it can be uncomfortable to carry sometimes. The glock 19 is going to be a bit cheaper though, so there is that. Can go wrong with either though.

Thank you so much.

Yeah when going to the store i couldnt decide.

I was looking at all the guns next to each other, and the store owner even said they would make great guns.

But i was hoping for someone who uses these for long term to tell me about maintenance and reliability.

But yes i love the way the sig 9 handles.... the glock is light...
But a lot of my friends are telling me to get the SW M&P, if i had to choose one now.

This one.

Price isnt a very big importance on me.. if the gun is worth every dollar, then i dont mind paying for a expensive gun.

I personally have never owned an M&P, but every thing I have heard about them is that they are every bit as good as the glock, more or less equal. I have shot a few in .40, and they do shoot well. I would pick the sig over the glock or the M&P if it were me, and maybe toss a coin between the glock and the M&P if you couldn't decide.

So the Sig is your first pick?

This is what i kinda wanted to hear... lol..

And yeah i am more leaning on the sig and the M&P.

Glock 19 is the smart choice.

yeah my other friend tells me that too..

Get a glock first, and then get the other...

Now you see why im really lost...

All my friends give out good advice... so im looking for an outside source, to get more advice b4 i commit on one.

Anything u can say is better about the glock then the others minus, its been around for a very long time?

Everything you mentioned is a good option. People will tell you that the most important thing is to get a gun that fits your hand well. However, if you're new to guns, be aware that thinner guns will feel better than thicker guns but the difference once you are used to them isn't that big of a deal. Unless you have large hands, lean towards a midsize or smaller and you should be fine.

Advantages of Glock
- most proven platform
- more accessories than nearly anything else
- easy to dissasemble and cheap to replace parts
- solid warranty (go to a glock event and the guys there will take apart and replace any needed parts on the spot!)
- .22 conversion kit <= this is a BIG one

I don't need to talk about accuracy and reliability and durability. All of the ones you mentioned are solid and it isn't really worth arguing the differences.

There are lots of good choices out there. You've already mentioned Glock and S&W. The Springfield XD and XDm as well as the Ruger SR9 are some others that you might look into. I'm not saying that any of them are better than any others but just giving you a few other options to consider. 🙂 Perhaps some of your friends have some of the pistols you are considering and would let you shoot theirs to see if you like it? If not, people usually recommend going to a range and renting some to shoot to see what you like. I know that all are excellent brands and should serve you well. I don't know much about Sigs. I know they are considered top quality but for my uses I think I would prefer to save about $150-250 and go with one of the others. The only way you'll be able to tell much is to handle and shoot all of your considerations. Just my .02

If you are looking at other options in 9mm, Beretta 92 or 90-Two is a good choice, with a ton of accessories as well. The 92 has been the standard service pistol for the US military for 15 years now, so there is a lot of stuff out there for it.

If you consider one of those, look at the beretta m9a1 or the 90-Two. I just picked up a 90-Two a few weeks ago and I have been in love with it. Plus the mags are plentiful and can be found anywhere (same goes for the glock though too).

My beretta -

If you aren't planning on carrying, why the 229? p226 was my choice. Although now I want a 1911, and sig makes some nice ones in that variant as well. You can get them in 9mm as well. Beretta is also a nice choice.

What feels most natural and comfortable in your hand? There is your answer, as they are all good handguns. SIG's just seem smoother than the Glocks I have shot, but that is just personal observation.

Have you shot all of them yet? Personally I can't use a glock because of the way it fits my hand. I daily carry a 1911, which is most similar to the SIG out of the ones listed. The M&P and the Glock will be pretty similar in feel, and the XD will also be - and the xD comes in a multitude of different sizes if you're interested in carrying.

I have not shot an M&P, but I love my XD and its not uncomfortable to carry OWB.

I have an M&P 9 Pro that I use for competitive IPSC shooting. Other than some reloads that a friend of mine gave me, I have yet to have it jam. I just bought it last year and I've got roughly 3,000 rounds through it. The pro model has an extra inch on the barrel. I did have to replace the rear sight right out of the box though, it came with a green fiber front sight that wasn't matched to the rear for some reason. Most ammo works well with it, and 124 grain smooths it out real nice.....

I chose that one just because of the way it feels. Glocks don't fit my hand very well and I've yet to fire one that I'm comfortable with. I do like the XD as well, but the M&P ergonomics are awesome. If you're going to carry it, you should also consider if you want a safety, which the M&P does not. I don't like have to mess with safety in a competition.

Its the one my friends recommend me.
This is going to be my first hand gun.

They all feel nice in all honesty.. so im looking for owners input now.
Hoping to find out what the owners really love about there gun, that would make it stand out from a point which was missed in typical reviews.

yeah the which is why i have it more narrowed down to the sig and sw.

But i cant really decide.

If theres any else i should consider i would be glad to hear them.
As i said first time owner, so i would really like to know what im buying.

Well, there is a reason the sig costs more, and you do get what you pay for with the sig IMO.

My sig 229 in .40 was one of the most accurate out of the box pistols I have ever owned. The feel is perfect, the trigger is nice, shoots great, and I have never had a malfunction on it of any kind. I am sure the 9mm version is going to be just as good as that.

I know you cant decide, but if the money difference between the two isn't a big deal, I could get the sig if it were me.

Does the sig come with night sights? I have yet to see a 229 sold around here that doesnt come with tritium sights.

I know someone mentioned the .22 conversion kit as an advantage for the glock, but they are available for the 229 as well - http://www.sigsauer.com/sigstore/ShowProductDetails.aspx?categoryid=103&productid=266

If you want a 1911, look no further than Kimber.

I've shot Glock's for years and have really loved them. I trust my life to one every day on and off duty. Last month I picked up my first Sig and I'm a convert. I like the trigger much better and the weight of the steel just feels right. P229 would be my pick. My current off duty carry is a P239, I love that darn gun.
