Time and focusing on other things. You can take all the time in the world, but if you use that time to think about her you will make yourself worse. When people in your situation think about these things, they usually focus on only the good and not what lead up to the separation.
Also don't think it's always someone's fault for a breakup. Most of the time, there really is no blame other than two people just being different.
Personally I find after a breakup getting into dating and socializing right away is the best medicine. Nothing to take your mind off an ex then to find someone that knocks your socks off. Just keep it light and don't move to fast and when the inevitable questions of 'what were your exes like' comes up keep it simple and to the point. I often will describe them, what they did for a living and usually mention we merely were heading in different directions. There are a couple I have no problem being honest in their stupidity in the relationship though.
People mostly find those that only had exes-from-hell are usually the problem in that
