YAGT: Recommend me a shotgun

Another vote for Mossberg here, but if you want it strictly for home defense on a budget, check out the Mossberg Maverick that Academy Sports carries. Think it retails for $180 or so for the 12ga with 18.5" barrel. My son has the Maverick in 20ga, and I have a 500, an 835 and a 935 all in 12ga, so you can say I am happy with Mossberg.

wow....such a strange houseworming gift. If the first thing you think of when moving into your new home is I gotta buy a shotgun for home defense, I suggest you look into moving to a safer neighborhood.

That's what I have, feels great, shoots great. Pick up some reduced recoil 00 buck shells and you're ready to go.

Yeah, it's a great gun. I just got a recoil absorbing stock for it, and i'm planning on getting a vertical surefire grip/flashlight on the pump.

I usually keep a mix of 00 buck and slugs on the grip.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to protect your castle, regardless of the type of neighborhood you are in.

You spend a couple of hundred dollars getting smoke/CO detectors and fire extinguishers around your house to protect from house fires (which are a relatively rare occurance). Why not spend a couple hundred to be able protect your family in the event of a break in?

hahaha kinda. It would have been my first housewarming gift had I moved into a gated community in Pleasantville.

I've already purchased months ago everything I need for a kitchen. This is something I want/need for my safety. I'd rather have it and not need it than not have it and need it.

My mom was killed because she didn't have one and needed one - no one and nothing will ever change my views on guns.

You don't get insurance because you expect your house to burn down, you get insurance because if it burns down and you don't have it, you're f**ked.

You don't buy a gun for defense because you expect someone to break in...

Suggest a couple more and I'll add a poll then go check out all the ones suggested. I guess I needed to look up the difference in gauges, because I know almost zero about shotguns.

i agree, there is nothing wrong with buying a gun for home defense. And a shotgun is probably the best for it.

I just thought it was weird that was the one of the first things he thought he needed when moving to a new place. made me think is he moving to some place very dangerous? But then he posted his response that cleared things up.

There really isn't anything else to suggest besides the mossberg 500 tactical and the remington 870 tactical. They are the two major law enforcement shotguns, and they are the two best options for home defense.

Go for the mossberg if you want the cheaper option, get the remington if you want the (slightly) better gun, but it will probably be about twice as expensive. Both are fantastic shotguns though.

If you're new to them, get an automatic. If you ever need it, you're more likely to short-stroke a pump than have an automatic fail.

Remington 1100 or 11-87. You can find old 1100 police riot guns on the cheap.

sorry to hear that. Hope you get a good shotgun but never have to use it in self defense.

I was six so it's not longer a real burden. I didn't mean to bring it up for sympathy, merely explaining my reasoning or irrationality however someone may view it.

But thank you 🙂

Does anyone else still remember the good old days when YAGT usually meant "Yet Another Girl Thread"?

When I read the title, I thought it said "Yet Another Girl Thread: Recommend me a shotgun" and expected all hell to break loose. 😱

My message below is from this thread.

Lots of suggestions there.

Both 870 and the Mossberg 500 are nice guns for personal protection. There can also be some good deals on used ones as well. Have you visited you local gun shop? Even pawn shops sometimes have nice used guns for not a lot of money.

One other brand to consider should be the NEF or H&R (one bought the other and then Marlin bought them) Pardner Protector Pump. They are an 870 clone and seem to get decent reviews.

Scroll to the bottom...

One knock is that they are made in China but the quality seems nicer than many other more expensive guns and about on par with the 870 Express. They can be found for under $200 new. I am seriously considering getting one for myself. My dealer sells them for $170 which I think is a pretty good deal and he seems to like them. Might be worth a look anyway.

If all you want it for is personal protection then the NEF Pardner Pump Protector should do nicely.

Remington 580 Express or other 580 variant.

Excellent gun and very serviceable.

I thought the 580 was a .22. Maybe you mean 870?

oops, yes I mean the 870...I'll edit. I was not thinking straight
