Overall the m16 is better. The US army doesn't use an AK47 and IMO they can use whatever the hell they want.

From what I've read and understood from movies and video games and never having fired anything in my life except a BB gun and shotgun I hear that the 47 is very reliable and exceptionally well constructed (moreso than teh m16).

Heh, I read the thread. Seems I"m right 🙂

Its not better constructed, so to speak. The tolerances on an AK are very loose, which is why you can abuse the hell out of it and it'll fire. Loose tolerances are also why the accuracy is sub-par.
I'm perfectly accurate with the ak47 in Counterstrike. What do you know 😉

Even if it were funny once (IMO it wasnt), trolling definitely isnt funny twice on the same subject. So, try not to troll in this thread.

We must have forgotten that everybody on ATOT is an expert marksman.

What's funny is that the AK47 is more 'reliable' because of shoddier build quality and tolerances. It was made on purpose to be less refined. That way it would fire no matter what. I guess in a battle situation, even if the M16 was more accurate or superior in any way, it wouldn't matter if it jammed while the AK47 was still spewing out hot lead.

Thanks Anandtech Moderator, but I truly feel that a Desert Eagle is the weapon for me. It's much easier to conceal, allowing me to sneak up to my opponent in an urban setting (where I reside). In addition, the .50AE is plenty of stopping power. btw, I've never trolled a thread in my life.

having served in the US Marines I can say I like the M-16. out of all the ones I have used in my 8 years in the Corps I only ever had one that I had issues with it jamming. . normally those were attributed to a bad magazine. my boot camp rifle was the best one i had and those take a beating. being droped, slamed and hit against all sorts of stuff. the rifle has a killing distance of 550 yards. at the ranges in the Marines we shoot a man size target at 500yards and I have never had any trouble hitting what I wanted with the M-16. I have used my friends AKs and they are not bad but the accuracy was not a good. the military wanted to have a weapon that has a longer range and more accurate than what the enemy has. as the saying goes if you can shot them first they cannot shot you.

<---Has a Galil kit lurking around waiting for a receiver and a build.

Galil recievers were serious $$$$ last time I checked.

I have a couple of leads on new manufacturers. Only $$$ instead of $$$$.

Damm import ban on IMI receivers.:|

If the M-16 is a better weapon, I wonder why that a couple of months ago in the news they reported that American soldiers preferred to use confiscated AKs over the M-16s in Iraq 😀

That was mostly vehicle crewman who preferred the smaller AK's, large quantity of available ammo, and throwaway nature of the AK's.

I also say some pictures of special forces type guys in Iraq or Afghanistan with AK's with what looked like Aimpoint sights on them.

So, which is the all around better weapon? The Ak47 or M16. Started from another post, was curious what the general consensus was.

AK47 and M16 have 2 different objectives.

AK47 uses 7.62mm rounds (i think).. it's meant to kill
M16 uses 5.56mm rounds.. Mostly it's not meant to kill, but to wound. The reasoning on this is that, when you wound an enemy, it takes 2 out of the battle (the wounded and second person to help the wounded). Example: If you get shot with M16 on the chest, it will exit out of your butt.. something like that..

I have shot both weapons and have to say that both are great weapons (except the Chinese verson of AK47).
Earlier M16 models had a selection to shoot automatic (you can shoot a whole clip with 1 trigger pull). Later version went to burst (3 shots per trigger pull) along with semi. With a simple tool (file), you can make any burst mode into auto..

If some guy pulled one out on me I'd sure as hell run! So yeah, it is just for show. All they have to do is SHOW it and your runnin! 😉

Having had a lot of experience with both, I prefer the M-16.

If you're a slob and can't clean your weapon, the AK would be a better weapon for you. I knew a lot of guys like this in the Army. They'd complain that the M-16 is a sh!tty weapon, then you'd look at their rifle and see that it's caked with goo. Clean it once for them before a day at the range, and they'd thank you for "fixing" their gun. 😕

If you can keep your weapon clean, the M-16 is much better. Far more accurate and much easier to control when firing 3 round bursts.

That is, of course my opinion. Yours may differ, but you wont be able to change my first hand experience with both weapons.

I like this quote

Two weeks ago, Sgt. Sam Bailey of Cedar Falls, Iowa, was in a Humvee when a patrol came under rocket-propelled grenade and heavy machine gun fire. It was dark, the road narrow. On one side, there was a mud wall and palms trees, on the other a canal surrounded by tall grass.

Bailey, who couldn't see who was firing, had an AK-47 on his lap and his M4 up front. The choice was simple.

"I put the AK on auto and started spraying," Bailey said.
