Dude, I ask girls to study with me all the time. It is not a date. We usually end up getting soda at the end of the night, but it is not a date.

Well, that didn't last long. Welcome back.

I am not back permanently, I am merely satisfying a jest.

Yah... uh huh. You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.

:p

I don't think it is a date unless it is all formal and all. MTV had some sex2k show on last night that I watched parts of during the commercials which would create many definitions for dates, from formal to 1 hour of $1 beers.

It's a date that becomes sad and pathetic if you go around telling people you have a "date," since it's not a big deal.

It's not a date, she's trying to get to know him. It could lead to a date, though.

Yes, that's right. After the coffee shop (virtually guaranteed that it's not a date in her mind), if you think it's still possible that she can stand one more moment with you :), then you ask her for the real date.

It is a date where a guy and a girl meet but dont keep your expectations too high...I meant Mr. X's expectation. It could just mean two people grabbing coffee. However Mr. X can capitalize on this opportunity and see where it could go from there.

well, recently i asked this girl i met a few weeks ago if she wanted to go out to a movie with me. This was because i wanted to get to know her more and the only time we have convo's is on msn messenger, so i thought i should do something about him.
So agrees and i think great. Next day my friend [who is one of her best friends] told me how this girl i wanted to get to know had said to her "so when are we going to the movies then". Apparently she didn't wanna go on her own "cause she doesn't know me"

well that's the whole frickin point, we don't know each other so we go out together, and as there would have been no one else there we'd be 'forced' to talk to each other, so now we'll end up both talking to the mutual friend the whole time. dam it. [we're 16 so maybe she's clueless]

No. But getting close.

Shot in the dark: Kelvrick?

Nah, Kelvrick lives here in Davis and he has a girlfriend. If I were to venture a guess it'd be Darein (or is that Darien - I always get the spelling mixed up and we have one of each) who's a UW student and lives in zakath's dorm.

no, coffee is a pre-date. Its where you go to see if you are good enough to date. Only anything that ends with making out and dinner is a real date.

Main Entry: 2date
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Middle French, from Late Latin data, from data (as in data Romae given at Rome), feminine of Latin datus, past participle of dare to give; akin to Latin dos gift, dowry, Greek didonai to give
Date: 14th century
1 a : the time at which an event occurs <the date of his birth> b : a statement of the time of execution or making <the date on the letter>
2 : DURATION
3 : the period of time to which something belongs
4 a : an appointment to meet at a specified time; especially : a social engagement between two persons that often has a romantic character b : a person with whom one has a usually romantic date
5 : an engagement for a professional performance (as of a dance band)
- to date : up to the present moment

Zakath15, what are you still doing here? I thought you were gone for your own good? Or has not your subscription expired?

In any case, of course that is a date. I'm surprised it's being debated. I didn't know that some people don't even consider that a date.

For those of you who said you do that all the time, the mistake you made was the intention. He didn't say lets have coffee for study. He said, let's go for coffee. This was after his finals. I think intention is what makes a date. Coffee is just a different level of dating. It isn't indepth. It's looking at the surface to see if you two would be more interested in a relationship.

I don't post very often, but I do stop in from time to time. This was done in jest to irritate my friend and to see what other people thought. Thanks for your input.

Shalom!

Yea I also agree... Its after finals so its not being mistaken for studying. Now to me a date means getting together with someone to get to know them better. A dinner and or movie is not required. Neither is making out or getting a little nookie. *shurgs* I guess Im in the minority.

Sort of...

This doesn't seem to be an official date though. I go out for coffee with my female friends all the time.

yeah, except it isn't coffee......but it is a date, not a very romantic on though, as mentioned before
