YAGT: I think this belongs here

Our one year wedding anniversary is coming up and she already bought me an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe and 1 GB of Kingston RAM as my gift. My computer currently is running just fine XP2800+, 2GB RAM, AIW 9800PRO. I was going to wait until Conroe came out to upgrade but since she already bought me a motherboard, my plans are now complicated. Should I return the motherboard (which might make her a little disappointed) or just go ahead with the upgrade.

Now, if I do go ahead with the upgrade, what parts should I be looking to get? Opty? X2? Vid Card?

The old 2 gigs of ram you have is it PC3200? Conroe is a powerful machine, but you already got a motherboard, and 1 gig of ram. Extra 1 gig of ram for total of 2 gigs is really cheap. All you'll need is X2 cpu and something like X1800XT/7900GT. X2 is not going to be the fastest cpu after conroe, but it will by no means be slow. Either way it'll hold you over for another 1-2 years when the industry will move to DDR3 and intel will have changed chipsets 3x.

Yeah...the old rig's RAM is PC3200. I forgot to mention my budget for the rest of the parts is about $700

Systems now are cool too!!! Geeze.
If I was you I'd byte the bullet and upgrade, the fact that she went through all the effort to get you a motherboard(she doesn't know alot about hardware I'm guessing) is impressive. I think it would probally be very crushing for you to do that whether she admits it or not. I know that my GF is extreamly proud of all the effort she puts in and actually finds me a techy gift that I don't have, I would never return it because of the amount of effort she puts into these things unless she paid too much and it was a piece. Then I might interviene.

The A8N-SLI Deluxe is a very nice board. Saw a 144 Opteron for about $130 from Monarch that would do nicely in it.
Keep the 2800 & the 9800Pro, get a router & do a network so that she can play, simultaneously.

It wouldn't be very thoughtful to return it, chances are you will be with her longer then any Conroe machine would be with you.

That being said I would get an Opty dual or single core according to your budget, and a 7900gt or gtx if you can foot it. Then oc the crap out of your CPU.

Wow. My girlfriend wouldn't even begin to know what motherboard and ram to buy me unless I specifically told her, wrote down the exact model numbers and gave her an url that would take her directly to the hardware components on say Newegg's site! Not that that's a bad thing. A nerdy girlfriend might build a better computer than me and I would be so jealous!!!

Wow....the techiest gift my GF has gotten me is a set of alpine type s component speakers.

She already has a computer similar to mine (XP2800+, 1GB RAM, 9800PRO) which I built for her and she plays WoW with me on it.

Is it worth getting the Opty 165 over the 144? Its almost double the price but would I see a noticeable increase in speed?

Women > Computers

Don't take a chance in disappointing her. Take the relief in knowing that gaming is more heavily focused on the video card rather than the cpu. Considering your current spec's, you'll be a happy camper, and so should she. 😀

Also make sure you show alot of appriciation, cause I think that she probally worked hard on that and you should acknowlege it. (best gift EVAR type speak)

I have both and I wouldn't go double the price for a 165 again.

One thing about the A8N-SLI Deluxe; the fan on the northbridge is loud and tends to fail. I would replace it with a passive heatsink now before it goes bad later.

Seriously i dont why there is all this hype about conroe, sure it should be faster but by no means it will be ground breaking, lets put it into perspective, the x2 will be MUCH more fater than ur XP athlon than conroe will be faster than X2. The diff detween conroe and fastest x2 is prolly like something the diff between 4400+ and
fx 60, sure faster but by no means enough to really care in the long run.

I think your perspective is flawed especially if Conroe's specs and benchmarks are correct. It would be more advantageous to wait 2-3 months to save 33% since Opty 165 is going for about ~$300 and the Conroe is expected to sell for ~$200 and you would get the bump in speed as benchmarks have indicated.

But, I'm going to go ahead with the upgrade and here are my current plans:

A8N-SLI Deluxe
Kingston 1GB RAM + Another 1GB RAM
Opteron 165
7900GT
2x250GB WD 16MB Cache SATA
Antec Sonata

Any comments or recommendations?

I think the Intel fanboism is at an alltime high with the Conroe. Yeah, it'll probably be better than what AMD has when it comes out, and honestly, it's about time, they've been lagging behind for 2+ years. One would have to believe that AMD has something in the works tho, especially with the money they've been dumping into companies that specialize in onboard cache technology. It's going to be an interesting rest of the year, that's for sure.
