she may be embarassed that the chef told you that. believe me if she has a crush on you that comment won't change her feelings.

take a chance and ask her out.

Feel her out man (not literally)! Make up some more convo with her next time you go through the line. Soften her up. Show you may be interested.

Then maybe sometime ask her if she can take a break and if you could buy her lunch and sit together there in the cafeteria. Pretty harmless I would say. Just make sure, what ever happens, you can still go through that line without regret or anger for her as she takes your money.

Edit: Be sure to make direct eye contact with her and SMILE!
