YAGT - handgun for wife

spidey07

No Lifer
She wants to go get her CCW and it's time she had her own weapon. I'm thinking revolver for her as she has a hard time operating my glock/XD style pistols and the tight springs. Caliber recommendations would help as well. I figure for her night stand a .357 would be good but not sure if it's something she would want to carry due to size and weight. More along the lines of a purse holster and weapon.

Good news is a buddy is now able to teach and certify so it's only like 30 bucks for her to get it.

Ruger LCR
DAO, if that matters.
I took my wife to shoot a 357, it was to heavy for her. She liked a snub nose 38. Until we shoot some compact 9s, I am leaning towards the 38.
We are going shooting Tuesday, hopefully the range will have a couple of the 9s.

what's wrong with a nice J frame? There are tons of hammerless models out there in all different calibers.

S&W 642 or Ruger LCR.

Walther PPK, If it was good enough for bond...

Also it's small, should be perfect for a handbag, although I realise it's not a revolver...

Sig P232 is much better. And neither is quite as small as you think. They dont make for good purse stowage. I'd recommend a pocket pistol like the LCP for that.

I'd stick with a revolver for self-defense for a non-regular gun user.
Much less to worry about. Simply point and shoot.

Right. And that is why I was leaning to revolver for her. It's operation is easier and straight forward. She knows her way with my pistols but I'd rather simplify it.
Same. My wife shoots very well but she's getting her own handgun and is going to learn to shoot it in her sleep.

If she can't safely operate it then it's a hazard. It's not that she doesn't know how to use it, but I want her comfortable and confident. She not with my weapons. She can operate them just fine. But for carry not goodenough for me.

why not let her decide what to get? A gun is a very personal thing and what works for one person won't always work for another.

I see this a lot on other gun forums - guys asking what they should get for the wife/gf/etc. Let her try out a bunch of different guns and see.

I'm a big guy and I have a large frame .357 and using .357 ammo out of it is not fun. Recoil is very heavy. .38 special out of it is great though. .38 out of a j frame is pretty decent too.

I also own a bersa thunder (compact .380) and that thing is very uncomfortable to shoot as well. Less mass, lighter gun makes felt recoil even worse.
