Just make sure you use "Sie" instead of "du" when you first apporach someone. Many will get offended if you address them with the "du" form.

As for your question: take off your watch and ask, "Wie spaet ist es?" (what time is it?). Or, simply ask for her name: "Hallo, wie heisst du?" Or, sit down near her and buy her a drink. Nothing exotic, but it's worked in the past.

Ah, jemand wo die Deutsche Sprache kennt....wir muessen mal reden. I fang an langsam mein Deutsch zu vergessen und es war meine erste Sprache...
