YAGT: Bought my first firearm

Most gun shops have a pistol vise right? You think they would let me borrow it for a few minutes to sight in my P22? I'm not sure if I want to buy considering I'll probably only use it for a total of 20 minutes.

Maybe for a fee. Would hope it's not off so bad that you can't do it yourself after a few rounds.

The man's gotta start somewhere and 1500 is a good first day.🙂

No idea what my total is but I bought another fireproof file cabinet for it. "Valid" office expense.:sneaky:
I have about:
2000, .22
100, .22 mag
2500, .223/5.56 (I have both)
and a handful of 9mm and 20 gauge.

But at $5.99 a box, I will stock up on .223

Apologies for hijacking the thread, but I'd like to have some advice 🙂.

I was looking into a .22 as well. I was actually looking into Rugers, or a mosquito. I like the unique look of the Ruger, but the p22 is lighter. I'm not sure which to get as my first firearm. Reviews have been largely hit or miss with the Walther. I do like the look of it, and there seems to be quite a bit of accessories for it. It's light, and easy to shoot, but can it take any .22 ammo? Is it picky about ammo? I also read around that a lot of issues have been fixed with later iterations?

The p22 was on the top of my list due to its looks, weight, and accessories. I'm a bit torn between this, a mosquito, and a Ruger. Ruger is heavier, but man, does it look cool/unique. Maybe I'll get both?

I'm mainly buying one as a "starter" pistol, and for range. I plan on to get larger caliber firearms in the future, after I am comfortable with a .22, and with a safety course.

Heck yes. Bought 2500 rnds from Natchez before the spike a few years ago.

Looks like you need some .22 mag.

I've owned:

Walther P22 - Sold it. Didn't care for the accuracy
Sig Mosquito - Sold it. Didn't care for the accuracy

Browning Buckmark - Excellent gun. I can put 10 rounds within 2-inch groups without trying.

Haven't owned a Ruger, but have shot one and that would be my second choice.

It really depends what you're looking for, the Ruger Mark III is better made and more accurate to be sure, but it is quite a bit larger. The SIG Mosquito and P22 are comparable I haven't read up as much on the SIG, I know it's a bit larger, but I'm not sure if it has improved over the years like the P22 has. For me the P22 was small and had lots of aftermarket accessories. I'm just plinking and using it with friends, but if you're looking to target shoot, get the Ruger.

If anyone is looking for a small/cheap/accurate little .22 the Phoenix HP22 is an excellent deal, and they offer a lifetime warranty on it, after 9 years mine started not holding the mags in anymore, shipped it to them and got it back a week later completely rebuilt and cleaned. They have a "rangemaster" package available for it which has the standard 3" barrell as well as an extended 5" barrell, they're quick to swap out too. Only annoying thing is too many "safety features"...has to be on safe to drop mag, has to have mag in to take off safe, etc...with a few minor mods those can be changed though. For just over $100 you can't beat it...I do love the look of that Walther though

I prefer browning over ruger for their dedicated 22's.

Over both, I prefer my rock island 1911 with an advantage arms target 22lr conversion.

$300+ for the target conversion or $250+ for the standard conversion
$400 for a rock island 1911

So for 650, you have both a 45acp gun AND a 22lr that allows you to practice and get a feel for how the gun holds and functions.

The FAQ on the advantage arms website says the following regarding accuracy.
You should get 2 inch or better groups at 50 yards with the 1911-22S Standard Kit. The average group for the 1911-22T Target Kit is 1.6 inch at 50 yards, using inexpensive ammo. Quality, standard velocity target ammo like Eley 10X can produce 1 inch groups when used with the optional reduced power recoil spring.

^^ used one, they are pretty nice

used a para 1911 w a kit and it jams all the time. but its a really old kit

this thread making me itch for my new gloc to come in

Anyone have a good recommendation for a speed loader for the P22?
I see one that is just a piece of plastic to move the loading pin easier and there might be a lula one coming soon. Anyone have experience?

I once thought about getting a .22 for target practice. You gotta love the fact that it's only about ~$20 for 1000 rounds. 🙂
Sorry, Double post.

I started shooting relatively recently. 3-4 years ago, when a value pack of 550 from walmart was $8 bucks, I bought about 25 boxes. I filled up a 50cal ammo can "just in case." I think it took about 16 boxes. Did the same when a box of 50 9mm blazer brass was 4.99. Damn, those two ammo cans are heavy.

I try to stick to similar calibers. 22lr, 9mm, 308 and 12ga.

This McFadden Ultimate Clip Loader looks interesting. I wonder if it works with the P22. Are the magazines of a Ruger similar to the P22?

.22LR is awesome. Great fun and very educational for cheap.

I don't know about the Ruger Mk. III, but I could always drive nails with a Mk. II.
