This is not meant to be a parody of the smoking thread.

Lets say you live close to a chemical plant, and you wanted a gas mask for when the plant sounds the alarm that there has been a release, what gas mask would you buy?

Related news article about how an explosion at a local chemical plant that killed 1 person and hurt 3 others:

Awhile back a neighborhood close to a chemical plant was evacuated. If I remember right, somewhere around 1,000 people had to be evacuated due to an accidentally chemical discharge. It was something like 2 days before the people could return home.

Just to be sure.

Been there done that, have the masks in the basement. Its all fun and games till you are gasping for air on your front lawn.....

You need to identify the threat you want to protect against. The best gas mask in the world does no good if you end up in an acid cloud and your skin is dissolved off your body. Additionally filters have a shelf life and some of the older (read: milsurp) filters can end up in a very bad state after a long time.

The other aspect is good masks are expensive. Expect to spend 3-500 for a pair with filters. I'd look into the SCOTT masks. The M110 or maybe the AV series with 40mm adapter.

But as said, its best to know what you are protecting against. Theres a lot of nasty shit out there where you need full suit protection or a way to decon if you get exposed but have a mask.
