In the market for a handgun. Mostly for recreational shooting and backup home defense, with the possibility of carrying in certain situations.

I'm thinking 9mm or .38 I don't see the need for anything larger, nor do I want to pay a premium for the ammunition when I go shooting for fun.

I was thinking about getting a Walther P22 for rec shooting, and getting something else later down the road, but I would rather just have one handgun at the moment that I will be used to.

I was thinking of a Walther P99C. My budget is in the <$750 range, which puts a SW1911 out of the ballpark. (I think) I was also thinking about a Glock 19.

I am left handed, so ambidexterity is a must.

Any thoughts/advice/suggestions are appreciated. What do you AT-ers carry? Opinions?

Thanks kindly, folks.

Can't go wrong with a Glock. I own one (Glock 17) and am thinking of getting another, this one will be a model 21 though.

You want a 12 gauge double (saw off) barrel shotgun for home defense.

He has a 12GA, see post #3. Sawed-off ... if you really need that kind of close-quarters dexterity, buy a shorty. :p

i really don't understand why everyone says you need a massive gun for defense.
a 9mm or a .38 special or .380 will be fine, especially for a multipurpose gun, just make sure you have it loaded with hollow points for when you know you need it for defense.

Not disagreeing with you but unless you're planning on strolling through the projects with the wrong gang colors on you probably won't know exactly when you need it for defence.

Keep the HPs loaded all the time. ;)

Well, no one plans a home invasion or robbery ... Better to say "Have JHP loaded whenever you're not at the range" :p

A .40 would offer a significant bump in stopping power. I realize it's a backup firearm, but there's some saying here that I'm probably going to mangle:

"You should only use your pistol to fight your way back to the rifle you never should have dropped"

yeah, i guess that doesn't sound right. what i should say is keep a loaded clip of hollow points with you at all times and swap it out only when you are going to do recreational shooting. sound better?

the glock .40 is my hangun of choice. Its ammo costs the same as those of 9mm's and .357's, but it just seems to have that extra power.

i'm still fvcking waiting on a Bersa Thunder. I can't believe those things are that popular.

I may have to end up spending more than i want on it to get one. its been liek 2 months or so now since i told my uncle to get one for me (he runs a gun repair shop and sells guns also).

my uncle can get me a brand new one for $165 if they ever get them in stock and my uncle can grab one. i guess the problem is this place won't take backorders and seems to do 1st come 1st serve so if he doesn't grab one right as they come in, he loses out.

i've seen them on gunsamerica.com i think it is for about $195. Its not like i really NEED the gun right away or anything (and considering i'm kind of stuck getting my concealed carry permit because i can only come up with one reference. i need to call them and ask if there's a way around that) but it would be nice to have it.

Wow..if I could get one for $165, I'd probably buy one too. :)

What state are you in that you need references for CC? I paid $10 to the PD and had it in hand 14 days later.. :p

.40 range ammo is a lot more expensive than 9mm. You can get 100 rounds of 9mm Winchester FMJ at Wal-Mart for $10.95.

Honestly as far as I'm concerned .40 S&W, 10mm, and .357 Sig are answers to a question that should never have been asked. I understand the desire for a more powerful round than 9mm, but .45 ACP is ballistically more desirable than any of them in many respects, and I don't find it materially harder to shoot. To me 9mm is the best one-pistol caliber, since it is acceptable for self-defense and cheap to shoot, but .45 ACP is the best all-around self-defense round.

http://www.the-armory.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/wolf.html $7.95/box for .40 and .45
http://www.the-armory.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/9mm_ammo.html $6.95/box for 9mm

Granted that's online (and for Wolf ammo)..but it's not a drastic price difference.

I don't shoot Wolf. Again, you can get 100 rounds of quality Winchester 9mm ammo for less than $11. The Wolf you cited is almost 50% more expensive. Show me how to beat the Wal-Mart 9mm deal with .40 and I'll be impressed.
