seriously... and from what i see, it lays you out pretty direct, and almost seems to encourage joining more pages, aka more ad money for FB...

Saw a preview on 60 minutes tonight and it looks cool. Basically, gives you additional profile areas - sports, music, etc... and allows you to group/connect with friends by them.

Also, you can perform a search and it'll identify friends who may have a connection, ie. Search on Hawaii and if friends have Hawaii somewhere in their profile, it'll tell you, giving you the opportunity to ask them about it or whatever.

I also heard that it'll give you the option to use this new profile version or keep the current one.

i see it as a pretty large increase in data mining from FB... the more information they can get from you, the more and more targeted advertisements can be...

I went through facebook and found that I joined on May 24, 2004. I was the #6039th member of my school. Can we just go back to those days when they made it for schools only, and only for a handful of schools?

Make your own website for that.

got tired of the acne medicine advertisements on facebook did ya?

I'm sure you're getting tired of all the targeted ads for erectile dysfunction, ads for curing your micropenis issues, and the ads for Russian brides since you fail miserably at datin'.

Refer back to my words. It all makes perfect sense with what your saying. (Which is what I was going 4)

so the fact that in the past 1 year, after getting out of a 5 year relationship (something you have never experienced) having dated 2 different people specifically, having a current 'friend' and having had a LOT of fun... i fail miserably at dating?

Curious, are you able to switch back to the old version?

No. Once you switch, you switch.

I think all the people who are bitching are hilarious. A year or two ago, when Facebook last overhauled the profile page, everyone was up in arms about it and talked about awful it was. Low and behold two years later, everyone is defending that "awful" design as "good," "streamlined," and "straightforward." People really hate change.

I don't give a crap about the Facebook layout. As long as they don't start using neon colors, spinning penises, and midi files, all their overhauls thus far have been pretty good.

I am not bitching, I genuinely find this new layout to be much more user friendly than the old one... I just wonder about the 'other' reasons for the change.

I wasn't implying that you were!

My comments were directed at a lot of the people who are bitching about it, but only because it is different.

As for Facebook's reasons for the change, I think you're partially correct. The new layout encourages people to share more information than before, which is good for Facebook and good for the arrival of their eventual advertising network. On a less nefarious note, I also think that Facebook's changes reflect how social networks are maturing and how content delivery is becoming more sophisticated -- in short, they're trying to stay ahead of the curve and not resting on their laurels. With competition from Twitter, LinkedIn and, especially, the impending arrival of Google Me / Google +1 / Loop, that's probably a good strategy.
