This is very real possibility in our league right now.

Assume the following:

1. The idiot commissioner did not figure this possibility out ahead of time;
2. All other known tie-breakers are tied (division record, head-to-head, point differential, etc.);
3. Ties are worth 1/2 win-1/2 loss;
4. We do not want to resort to coin-flip, RPS or any other such silliness.

Who would you send to the play-offs to get their butts kicked by the No. 1 seed and who gets to sit home and watch Week 15 and dream about next year?:

IMAGINEERS 6-6-2 0.500
DEVILS 7-7-0 0.500

Show your work (i.e. explain your reasoning).

MotionMan

UPDATE (11/25/2007):

Now it looks like the following is the likely result:

IMAGINEERS 7-5-2 0.571
DEVILS 8-6-0 0.571

MotionMan

UPDATE (12/11/2007):

Ended up 8-6-0 and 7-5-2. The Commish ruled that 8 wins are better than 7 wins and gave the playoff spot to the Devils.

BTW, I am the Devils.

I started 0-5, then 1-5, then 1-6 before winning the next seven (including the season ending win over Imagineers) to make the playoffs. Also, I actually got the No. 3 seed, so I do not have to face the No. 1 seed until the Championship Game.

I'd keep it simple. Devils have won more games, that should be the next tie-breaker.

This is why in the league i'm in every team makes the playoffs...more fun that way IMO.

Believe me, we have had that debate as well:

"But, Imagineers has lost fewer games."

Well, then a tie shouldn't be worth .5. It should be worth more or less, pending what the commish thinks is more important...a win or a loss.

What about strength of victory?

they also won fewer too. the devils for the win. I don't see how you could go with the imagineers.

Nowhere in the history of anything have I ever seen a team that was 6-6-2 rated better than a team was 7-7. That's not to say it hasn't happened, of course; that's just to say I've never seen it.

But since, in your system, ties somehow make a 6-6-2 team equivalent to a 7-7-0 team, go with strength of schedule. Go with most total points scored. I mean, it's ridiculous to me that this is even being considered, but it's not my league. Dig deeper into the standings.

"2. All other known tie-breakers are tied (division record, head-to-head, point differential, etc.); "

Is that likely?

They currently almost equal on total points and point differential.

Yeah - strange stuff, to be sure.

Almost Equal != Equal.

The one with more points wins. And if it's Imagineers, sucks for Devils.

Not quite, but it is so close, they conceivably could end up tied.

Again, this question requires you to assume a few things (since we are not at week 14 of the season, this obviously has not happened, yet). We just want to be ready if it should happen and not decide after the fact.

So whats almost? Numbers please.

And I would agree with others above a 7-7 team beats a 6-6-2. If you tie once you suck but to do it twice dont even ask for a playoff spot for real.

Unless there is a large point difference between the 2 thats how it goes. And if 7-7 team has more total points then its a no contest call.

EDIT: And in our group if 2 teams tie for a spot then it falls to "overall" points for who gets it. Doesn't matter if its 1 point or 50000000.

Really, please, assume tied on points and point differential.

Obviously, if they are not tied on either of those, we know who wins.

This is exactly why i used fractional points when i did FFL last year as a commish... too many wacky situations. With fractional points, it's almost impossible for 2 teams with identical records to also have the same amount of fantasy points.

We also always choose three tiebreakers each week so we don't end up with ties. So my tiebreaker is usually my backup kicker...

We use to have a no tie rule, too, until the Commish lost three games because of it.

(I know, I know...time for a new Commish, but no one else wants to do it.)
