For the FF-ers out there, what do you think of a league that has several flex spots, instead of set roster positions? The league I'm in features the following:

QB
WR
RB
WR/RB
WR/RB
WR/RB
TE
K
Def

There seems to be some debate among the league members as to whether or not this is a good thing. Some feel that it will kill trading if the roster parts are too interchangeable and that it will make management too easy and eliminate the skill involved as a factor. Others argue that the flexibilty will make more trades possible as people will do more WR-RB deals as they are mostly interchangeable. This kind of setup will also affect traditional draft strategy obviously. Anyone ever participate in a league setup like this? Anyone have any thoughts? TIA.

BTW, the points setup is more or less 6 for TDs, 1 pt/10yds rushing & receiving with an add'l 0.5/reception receiving. For passing, 4 for TDs, 1pt/25yds.

IMHO you are allowing for to many RBs. RBs tend to score more points then WRs in most leagues so that could lead to some really high scores. Plus good RBs are a bit of a commodity so you open your league up to having one or two people really stack points on the rest of the league (If a couple of people happen to draft well and a few other players get hurt all of the good RBs coupld get stuck on just a couple of squads.). When I set up a FF league I try and make it so the positions that are active fit into the normal contraints of an 11 man offensive squad.

Just my 2 cents.

Edited for clarity.

Makes running backs way way too important. I'd draft running backs with my first three, maybe first four picks unless Peyton Manning was available. I'd try to start 4 RBs and 1 WR every week (probably not possible to accumulate that many good RBs, but I'd try).

How many teams in the league?

12 teams in the league. Only allowed to carry at most 4 RBs on the roster, up to 6 WRs.

I would definitely drop two WR/RB spots for WR only spots.

With up to 4 RBs a team, people just make sure your RB back did not get decaptitated in the previous week and leave them on the roster.

Make people work harder to find the receivers that might get some TDs and yards for a given game. Juggling WRs is a lot of fun, people should always be checking the injury reports, cornerback matchups, and who is on a hot streak. There is much more work involved in shifting around receivers than there is with running back. Good FF players who put the time into research can get an advantage which is the way it should be. This is what makes fantasy football fun!

The league I'm in is set up like this:

QB
RB
WR
WR/RB
WR/TE
WR/TE
K
Def

And our roster is limited to a total of 16 players, not counting any on IR. Players are allowed to be on IR if they are Doubtful/Out. And we have 12 teams and 4 keepers each.

Did I mention I can't wait for the regular season to start?

I don't see a problem with it. You have to remember that WRs' and RBs' values change DRASTICALLY from league to league based on scoring. You can't blanket say, "I'd draft a RB in the first four rounds" without knowing the scoring. Last year I was in a league that, stupidly, set every completion for QBs to 1 pt. I drafted Daunte (Manning was gone) in the first round because you just can't pass up that type of scoring. It paid off quite well (the guy with Manning beat me in the finals).

Why not try it?! I think it would allow for more trades.

It also depends on how your scoring system is set up alson. If you give extra points for say reception yards, it'll even up the WR/RB debate.

edit: oh and i personally don't care for flex positions.

thats too many flex positions in my mind. i'd drop at least one flex, maybe even two for only wr. if it stays, try to fill your roster with as many receiving rbs. LT, Duece, Tiki, Westbrook

I think for typical scoring formats, most people try to draft a RB first, given the opportunity. Reason? On avg, they get the most points. So, I think having THAT many flex positions with the RB involved is bad. Think about it this way:

[12 teams] x [4 RBs/team] = 48 RBs max RBs

There aren't even that many "playable" RBs to begin with. Only 32 teams. So right off the bat, some teams are going to be at an advantage with more RBs. What about the other positions, you say? Well, those teams with more RBs will still have starting QBs/WRs that will at least put up some numbers. When BYEs come, some teams may not even have a RB to start.

I care about fantasy football deeply and enjoy reading this and many other threads on the topic. Pretending you are somebody who has any influence in the sports world and engaging in fictitious competitions with fictitious teams is a worthwhile experience. Please continue to bump this thread as I will enjoy checking for it at the top of offtopic. Also please feel free to quote this and echo my sentiments as I will assuredly read this thread's replies in the future.

Umm...that's why it says YAFFT in the title. So you can NOT click on it and NOT post meaninglessly in the thread. Please feel free to quote me on that. :disgust:

Everyone else, thanks for some good thoughts.
