In a formal setting of a meeting like this, when you don't know people, you usually address them more formally unless they say, oh just call me Wendy, or whatever. That's just courtesy. If I was at a meeting at a University with a bunch of Professors and a Judge there I wouldn't just start calling them by their first name and say whatever if they corrected me. I believe that everyone should be treated equally regardless of age, race, gender, religion, etc.
I do not believe that people should be labeled as racist, sexist, etc. based on rumor, opinion, or general hysteria.
