YAET (yet another ebay thread)

I just purchased a tool on ebay from a new seller. The listing says paypal accepted, and that's how I paid. He claims he can't get the money for some unknown reason, and wants me to cancel the paypal payment and send him a money order or wire transfer. This sounds odd to me.
If I send the fellow a money order, do I lose the ebay buyer protection? I wouldn't normally be very concerned, but it's a thousand dollar tool, well out of what I consider acceptable risk range.

Thanks in advance.

don't send money order because ebay won't protect you. With paypal, buyer has all the leverage. He is either trying to scam you or save on fees, either way... you should proceed with caution.

Paypal holds the money for new sellers for a certain amount of time, like escrow, so he might just want his money and not be trying to scam you.

But there's no way I would send him a money order.

Skizzam. Ebay is an interesting place, it went from being a hardcore lawless wasteland to a fairly controlled place, with a few pockets of bad seeds.
