YAET: seller may be selling illegal copies

My wife wanted a fairly rare Australian movie, so I did a quick search on eBay to find if it were for sale. The search turned up quite a few DVDs, some in Australian DVD zone, others in US. I chose the US DVD zone and a 'Buy It Now' option.

Before bying the DVD I read the description, and it stated that this is a double DVD feature, digitally enhacned from the original on VHS. The seller has tons of positive feedback, with a few negatives which I attributed to occasional mishaps whid do happen.

The auction ended on 13th, and so far I haven't heard from the seller, which troubled me a little, since all the other positive feedback indicated the fast shipment. I e-mailed the seller today, and decided to study his feedback more. Well, it turns out he may be selling illegally burned DVD-copies. There were a few complaints in the past about receiving copies rather than originals. Yet, eBay doesn't seem to care.

What would be my options if I receive a copy instead of an original DVD? Should I settle with this guy for a refund or do smth else?

Thanks

this is not abnormal for ebay. ebay has a TON of sellers who sell illegal copies. in fact, i used the amazon.com reseller option on a dvd i wanted to ensure authenticity and it was definitely *not* authentic, which really upset me.

a good way to check for authenticity is to look at the UPC symbol on the back of the case. match it up with a program, such as upcdatabase.com or dvd profiler (go to the root of the dvd collection link in my sig and download the program).

my "day after tomorrow" movie had a upc symbol that matched "woman on top" -- i doubt that's the real thing 🙁 what a waste...

as far as what to do, you may have to deal with it, but you could just tell ebay that this guy is selling non-legit stuff and get him kicked off.. or at least settle through ebay for your refund if the guy does not cooperate.

Why not? I thought that was 'digitally remastered'. The australian dvd's are official, and might as well be remastered from VHS.
