YAET: It looks like I've been screwed on my first ever egay deal

Here's the abstract: I listed a 250GB Maxtor HD on ebay late last month. The auction ended on the 4th, and the winner was a guy from Canada with 0 feedback. At the time, I also had 0 feedback so I couldn't justify being picky about that. I sent him an email with the shipping fee and my address, and he sent me his address. I shipped it out on the 6th.

Since then, I haven't heard a thing from him, and I haven't seen any form of payment. I sent him a short message on the 19th asking if and when he sent his payment. I never got a reply, so a few minutes ago I sent him this:

On the 19th I sent you a message asking when you sent payment of US
$148.85 for the Maxtor 250GB hard drive I shipped to you on the 6th. You
should have recieved it between the 10th and 16th. I have STILL not
recieved any form of payment, and you did not reply to the last message
I sent.

My address is:

My phone number is (123) 456-7890.

If you do not reply to this message in 3 days, I will call you.

Address, name and phone number changed of course.

So, am I taking the right course of action? Am I being too hard on him, or too soft? When should I get ebay and/or the police involved? 😕

UPDATE: I called him this morning. He says he mailed a money order out 2 and a half weeks ago, and took down my address. I suppose it's possible it was lost in the mail.

You shipped the item before you got the money!?! WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU!?!

Edit: I just read your post, I still have to say you are stupid for shipping first to a guy with 0 feedback. I would like to feel sorry for you but your stupidity has forced me not to.

i think its a no-show, you'll probably have to relist. 🙁

hey, we have the same address and phone number!! you're the weird guy downstairs with five legs, arne't u!

Oooooooooo here's a mirror, wipe that SUCKA off your forehead STAT!!

<edit>

Seriously though. If you were a shady individual, and you saw on Ebay that someone would ship the item first because they are a nice guy and have 0 feedback, what would you do? Create a bogus account with 0 feedback, and rip the dude off. Ebay isn't the FS/FT forum, where people have quasi-relationships with the people they deal with...

I would like to cheer you up, but you are screwed. Sorry bro. Don't try to be nice next time. Ebay is a business, treat it as such.

oh, and speaking of this, could you ship me a new computer? once i receive it i'll send you a $2000 check.

Two things:

1) You should NEVER have to ship first on ebay. It doesn't matter what your feedback is, there are polices that protect buyers but very few that protect sellers. NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER SHIP FIRST ON EBAY, and don't even THINK about advertising that you would do that to begin with. Ebay, although it's an auction site, is no different from a store. You wouldn't go to the mall and expect to take a video game home under the condition that you would bring the money when you found out it works, right?

Your best bet is to wait to see if this person calls you back (and I'll bet $20 he doesn't.) and then contact ebay... (who will probably tell you the same thing I just did, but it's best to start there.) With any luck, they can first off suspend the guy's account, then find out if he has another profile with a matching address or anything, suspend those accounts... or they may be able to take more action than you can.

At this rate though, you are probably up poo creek without a paddle... probably without a boat too..

2) Stop being a sissy and post his address. ATOT takes care of it's members.

Because I had stated in my listing that I'd ship first since I didn't have any feedback yet.

oh god.... i dont believe this. 😱 you are lacking in common sense. maybe you trust people too much. :| people suck man. sorry.

Boy--was that dumb of you!

BTW--I did the same thing in my eBay n00b days 😱

I sent a copy of Thief2 (how apropos) before I received the payment. All of my auction items were packed and I didn't want to make a separate trip to the P.O. I'll never forget the thief's name, if that was indeed his real name :|

Chances are you're outta big $, but good luck anyway.

man... i cant really say i feel sorry for you..

i'd reccommend asking canadian at members to maybe check out about this, but then again, looks like you're screwed.

international on ebay = crappy. i ordered a mobo from germany, i didnt get screwed over, but for those 2 weeks, i was cursing my own stupidity. i got lucky, though.

Wow, this isn't FS/FT where you can actually check out the buyer/seller and see if they are trying to scam you, this is EBAY, where anyone in the world can register. I would bet $5 that guy registered that nick as soon as he saw you would ship first.

Actually, it was registered in late October, about a month before my listing.

If anyone has anything helpful to say, send a PM. I'm not reading this thread anymore.

how about there's pretty much nothing you can do except contact eBay. They're probably your best bet. Contacting the police in canada will do nothing, $150 complaint, they got bigger moose to fry.

I'll PM you with this too ...

You said he emailed you too. If you still have that email... look at the headers in the email. Perhaps you can trace it ... but at least you do have a real address you shipped to (presumably).

request that canada's tank roll up his driveway

our elite southpark forces (most recent episode) shall free canadia from saddam's grip
