The price it is now is about right, sadly i'm sure it won't stop until north of $600

iPhones cost a lot, used to cost even more, on eBay mostly because of people wanting them that lived in areas that couldn't buy them. You can use it on any GSM network as long as you know how to unlock it, and there is a huge market for them

You forget the price AT&T gives you is a subsidized price

There is no way someone should pay that much for an iPhone. It horribly old and it is not unlocked so you will still only be able to use it with AT&T. For that much you can get the 32GB 3GS phone AND a few months service.

Anyone with a computer can unlock it as long as it wasn't updated to the 3.1.3 firmware recently, and not everyone lives in the US. I realize this is a shock to a lot of ignorant american's but there are other countries out there who don't have AT&T

That is easily how much it is worth. Although anymore is too much, and it is still getting bids

Ebay is an international market, which is why you can often sell stuff like phones, computers, and processors for far more USD than it markets for here... the people buying them elsewhere gets a deal and you get an inflated return.

I have always been a bit shocked to find out what iPhone's sell for. But regardless of the fact that iPhones seem to hold their value ridiculously well, $560 seems a bit excessive for a used 8GB original iPhone. You can buy an 8GB 3GS iPhone with a better camera, a GPS, slightly better battery life, MMS, speech recognition, etc. on Ebay using "but it now" for ~$400.

I'm not sure what the guys bidding $560 for it are thinking - the seller says he's only shipping within the US...

I think you shouldn't have to pay for a data service for any phone with Wifi, but I would pay that much for a phone if it were one time and I could decline the data plan.

560 is ridiculous for a 1st gen iphone. that's the same price as a nexus one, and like others have said you can get a 3g or 3gs for less on ebay

Every other country that counts has the iPhone, nobody is waiting for AT&T users in US to get bored and sell them to us.:awe:

i wouldnt pay more than $250 for the original iphone, regardless of capacity. i see a lot of 8GB-16GB going for that price range too - in fact, the one i got was $175 for an 8GB, with all accessories and it was pretty much in great condition.

edit - forgot to mention it was craigslist...so things probably will be different in your area.

Craigslist would be a better way to go. 250 is pushing it for an 8gb iPhone 3g. anything more thant hat is ridiculous.

Looking at the bidding history, the top bidders have 0 feedback. Do people scam phone sellers like they do laptops, etc?

Good point, Beev. I didn't think to look at the bidding history.

I sold my neighbor's used (but near-mint condition) 16GB iPhone 3G for $475 (inc. shipping) on Ebay about two months ago. Even that seemed excessive to me...

Usually the formula for iPhones is: the AT&T price + activitation + one month service + early termination fee + a factor for new/used/greed

So a 8GB iPhone 3G should be $100 + $75 + $60 + $175 + $greed factor = $410+ for a new iPhone 3G. Take out a bit for it being used, take out a bit more if it's scratched, add a bit in for greed. That's a general rule of thumb, but it's accurate in my experience and I've sold ~6 iPhones for various people over the years.

Craigslist is definitely cheaper than Ebay in my experience. I think it's more that people on Craiglist remember that they paid $199 for their 16GB iPhone 3GS and don't actually know that they are selling for ridiculous prices on Ebay.

Phones run $500+ easily.

I monitor some of the top smartphones like the Samsung i8000, i8910, Nokia N97. It's all around $500+ Better phones like the HTC HD2 will be $600+.

I just bought myself a Motorola Milestone (GSM Droid) for $600. No I didn't get the typical Euro/Asia one because I need ATT 3g, so I bought the Telus one. They sell HTC Heros for Telus for $550+ because they know the 850/1900 users want their hands on Android...

But this is a case of a probable scam. iPhone 2Gs run for $150 - $200 on CL.
