Disclaimer, I was a Kirby salesman for a couple of months, long ago...
Kirby's are good vacuums, I haven't touched one in years, so I cannot comment much on CPA's experience,
except to say that a Kirbys perfomance can vary greatly depending on well it is adjusted to the carpet, and how much the
other attachments (shampooer etc) are used. I don't doubt that a new Dyson could own an older Kirby.
Royal makes their front ends look like Kirbys as a sales technique, but they don't offer as strong a motor, nor
the other attachments that come with the other brands of "cleaning appliances" like Kirby, Electrolux, Silver King, etc.
Cleaning companies have long established contracts with the companies they buy cleaning equipment from, the
intertia to try some new equipment is about the same as trying to get a company to dump all their servers and
OSes in favor of a completely new architecture. Plus commecial vacuums are usually either extremely cheap,
so they can be replaced quickly, or extremely rugged, more so than store bought cleaners.
