So, this last weekend I had a Friends and Family 25% coupon for Linens N Things. Normally, coupons aren't valid on Dyson vacuums, but his had no such disclaimer. Sure enough, the store accepted it and I walked out with the Animal for $374.25 ($499 less 25%). Eat your heart out Rossman!

Anyway, I already own a Kirby 5, which I've had for 7 years. I was also skeptical about the reports of the Dyson's cleaning prowess. After 10 minutes of use, I can tell you this:

I will NEVER go back to my Kirby again!

The Dyson owned the Kirby. 8 days ago we had used the Kirby in our bedroom. This last Sunday I used the Dyson. I was amazed at the amount of dirt and dust the Dyson picked up. It filled the catchbin up about a quarter of the way (and no, from the surface my floor does not look dirty). This couldn't have been from 7 days of traffic. I could only surmise that the Dyson's "sucking" ability kicks Kirby's ass. You can actually feel the force of the suction when you power the Dyson on - something I can't say about Kirby. I was truly floored to see the amount of crap the Dyson picked up. Not only that but the Dyson is half the weight. The attachments and extending hose take some time to figure out, but all in all this was a great purchase.

Cliff Notes:

1. Dyson > Kirby

I have a $120+ credit on my Target Visa account, plus a 10% off coupon, plus my wife's 10% employee discount and we just discussed getting a Dyson from Target. A few more experiences like yours will convince me to jump on one, especially since our old vaccum pretty much sucks.

thank you , i have to buy a new vaccum next month. the only reason i would consider a dyson is they sell them at costco

if they have the CPA seal of approval, that really helps me decide between it and the $150 cheapo that we normally buy

There is a commerical for... hmmm..i think it is the wind tunnel... that claims that it picks up 43% more than the dyson for a lot less money. Since I already own two dirt devil vacuums (one for upstairs, one for downstairs), I am not in a hurry to spend money on another one unless it is an awesome machine. I hear loads of good stuff about the Dyson.. but after seeing that commerical by wind tunnal and doing some google looking, I am not sure I want to spend that much money. Some sites say that the Dyson cannot be beat... a few day that the wind tunnel is as good for less money.

but every place i have looked says the Dyson is the best as bare floors, which would be good for me, since I suck at sweeping.
:)

If I ever get in the market for another sweeper (already have two Kirby's) I'll be sure to give Dyson a shot. I've heard enough good things that it can't be a fluke.

That's a great deal - I paid a lot more. :(

But it was worth every penny. I  my Dyson.

:)

The problem there is that the Wind Tunnel has a filter. The performance will slowly deteriorate until you get a new filter.

The Dyson was engineered to not need a filter.

2 Kirby's! :Q That's a lot of cash for vacuum cleaners.

wind tunnels suck. My family has two vaccuums that use 'em. They work great for a month or so, but then so much dirt gets in it and the filter that it just never sucks as well as it originally did, no matter if you clean the filters, replace em, anything.

Our Dyson is great. I had a Fantom before this, and it was good, but the Dyson is much better designed and friendlier to use.

Edit: I also appreciate being able to just rinse off the Dyson filter. I never wanted to spend the big bucks that Fantom wanted for their HEPA filter.

Well, I did it. Granted, we haven't vacuumed in a few weeks so I should have expected the thing to collect quite a bit, but I've emptied it twice already. The old vacuum could go for weeks without emtying it, but I can collect about as much dirt, lint, etc. in one room as the old one would pick up after doing the whole house. This thing is scary good.

Couple questions:
  • How'd you get "sucked" into buying Kirby?
  • What's the difference between Kirby and Royal?
  • Why do I NEVER see Dysons used commercially? Not in hotels, restaurants, offices, stores or anywhere else.

Consumer Reports says there are better vaccuums... with all the CR fanbois here, I'm surprised there's support for this gimicky appliance.

consumer reports doesn't report it as being that impressive. i trust their tests. psychological justification of purchase+ having to empty the bin is probably the thing. plus you are comparing a 7 yr old vacumn to a new one.
