This weekend, I finally decided it was time to bring home a new dog. I adopted Rocky who is a 10 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback. He had been in rescue for several months. I had visited him about a month ago but wasn't ready after losing my other two dogs the last couple of months.

I decided to rename him Kahn. He has separation anxiety and some behavior issues(afraid of the doggie door, won't allow you to touch his feet or ears) but I feel confident we'll be able to work on them. Weird thing is he's great with people and other dogs.

We took him down to the Esplanade during the 4th of July celebration and was fine with thousands of people petting him. He was also fine with fireworks though the subway passing by scared him. And like a puppy, when he wants to go out and play/exercise he starts being destructive and loud(very loud). At the foster home, he had six other dogs to play with but my dachshund likes to chase but not wrestling around with a dog five times his size. Luckily, I have a number of dog parks near me and when he gets old enough, he'll be our running partner.

Nice dog:thumbsup: my dog freaked out and ran away when we were lighting fireworks off in the backyard a few years ago. Got picked up by the pound and cost me $150 to get him out. The pound said thats their busiest time of the year. Most dog are afraid of them.

Right now, a ton b/c he's shedding his puppy coat. But in general, they shed very little and usually during the change in seasons. It's very short so it's pretty easy to vacuum up.

Yes, awesome dog. I am so sick of little annoying ones running around.
We've got one bigger dog and two chihuahuas. All three are totally awesome animals and provide excellent company to the family. Not to mention the security - nothing is going to sneak up on us with these three around.

Capt., that is a fine dog. Congrats on doing the right thing and rescuing him. Rescued pets often make the best pets.

My co-worker raises Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Did you have him checked out for Dermoid sinus? I heard it's very common and debilitating in these beautiful dogs.

Ditto. That's what a real dog is supposed to look like, a horse with a collar around its neck. I'm tired of all those stupid lap dogs running around everywhere.

Ridgebacks rock. Even after 5 years of working with her, our Ridgeback rescue still has some seperation anxiety. It's not as bad as it used to be, but she howls quite a bit during the day. But at least the destructive phase she went through originally has calmed down.

Shoot, you beat me to that. I can't believe it took that long on ATOT for someone to mention the name.

Cute pooch, the wienerdog looks less than thrilled with the whole situation.

Never did as it would have been detected earlier as a pup and operated on, if he had it. The vet records I have don't indicate anything.

Haha! That's one of the thing behind naming him Kahn. When I need to yell at him, I can act like Capt. Kirk!

And Mojo(the dachshund) definitely wasn't happy. He wanted to leave and everything I stepped back to take a pic of them he would walk towards me. I would have to pick him up and plop next to Kahn.

After my dog Lucky passed away, Mojo became really timid on his walks. I guess he felt more confident having a big dog with him. With Kahn, he's back to enjoying his walks.
