I'm buying a laptop for a 3 month trip to London over the summer. I've got piss poor credit, but Dell approved me for 1500. I chose Dell for the price and because I could not only get a kickass video card, but a screen with more than 1024 resolution for less than 2500 bucks. The laptop I wanted was 1954 out the door. I have saved up more than enough to cover the rest via credit card, check card, check, cash, whatever. But they won't do their credit and my payment combo. So rather than gain a sale, they lose one. I think they've got their head screwed on backwards.

What happened to the Dell I used to know and love?

Mark

Update
Someone suggested that I just go ahead and try to place an order online. I did and it went through but has been in the Order Processing stage since the 30th. Think I'll get it?

that's pretty whack, you pay $500 up front and lease the rest.. they should think before denying that. oh well, try toshiba I guess.

Hey Mark, if you work and your company has a Credit Union, check if they have loans for computer purchases. That's how I bought my laptop when I started school. The rates are way, way, way lower than through Dell, Gateway, etc and they just cut you a Cashier's Check, so you can deposit it and combine your funds.

I really really like the toshibas, but they don't make a model w/ better than 1024 * 768 resolution for less than 2500.

Whoops, missed that. Anyways, I had no credit when I applied for the CU loan and was approved, so you might want to try anyways (if Dell approved you, the CU might too). Good luck.

It must have died because the only Dell I have had experience with was a horrible evil monster.

I don't know... But you never said why your credit was so bad. If it was for something such as non-payment for an item in the past, they might have a good reason to deny you a line of credit. Dell likes making money as much as everyone else, but it sometimes makes sense not to sell expensive equipment to a potential deadbeat customer. I'm not making accusations, mind you, but I like to hear both sides of the story before choosing a side to root for.

1. Lots of student loans
2. Lots of late payments when I was an undergrad a few years ago.

Ouch! I know a co-worker who's going through the same thing right now. Even though he has a steady 50K a year job now, he can't get a loan to buy out his apartment. Too many unpaid student loans, and too much credit card debt.
