So this is my only hangup on switching from Charter Cable in the LA area to D*

I've read that ESPNHD and ESPN2HD are still in MPEG2. Is that going to be a huge difference from what I see now via cable? Obviously you don't know what my cable looks like, but let's just assume that it looks the same as your HD cable did before you switched.

I have Comcast Cable, don't have DirecTV but my friend does and ESPN / ESPN2 HD look great. He also has ESPN News HD... I don't but that looks great as well. I wasn't effected by the degradation of image quality like other Comcast users (more HD channels added but picture quality is still the same).

They have both versions of ESPN still broadcasting in MPEG2 and MPEG 4. There are a few other channels that way as well.

From my personal experience, ESPNHD and ESPN2HD look much better with DirectTV compare with the local cable company (CableOne). Other channels are much better too, even the SD channels are better. The drawbacks are, during stormy weather, I still lose signal with DirectTV, no local channels, two years contract, local support is laughable. What I like about CableOne is, if I have any problem, a technician would arrive on the same day of my complaint.

Correct me if I'm wrong, many digital cable systems are still on MPEG2...

I honestly see no difference between ESPNHD on Dish Network, D*, Bright House Networks (Time Warner in Tampa, controlled by Newhouse), and FiOS. My parents have BHN at home, I just use OTA HD here for college. I do notice a difference between cable and OTA quality local channels, with OTA being better when reception is good.

ESPN and ESPN2 are in MPEG-4 starting today. DirecTV's latest satellite was launched a couple of months ago and has begun broadcasting.
