my old 9th grade photography teacher got one a week ago, i tested it out. simply amazing
hope you can get it soon
and if it weren't for the memory sticks, which would you get? i would actually be biased to the panasonic since i have a ton of SD cards
Id say the Sony still, but that is a very loose conclusion as I havn't seen the camera in action. Usually I really like Sony...but this one kind of dumps all the things I like about sony...Recharge Lith-ion, Zeiss lens...seems the only thing it has going for it is the 12x opt with IS. When it comes out Id have to see how good the lens is and how good the IS is compared to the Panasonics...
By that time, there maybe a more concrete knowledge base about canon's S2.
Zeiss was apparently not willing to put their lens in a camera with IS -- something about the way it mucks with the lens (read it somewhere, probably dpreview). Sony produces their own lenses and has achieved good results, and their imaging chips are among the best in the world so that's still a huge plus.
I was wondering is this is the same imaging chip used in the F717, but it isn't (2/3" in F717 vs. 1/2.5" in the H1 -- F717 is larger), which is a shame. Nevertheless, lens probably is very good with a reasonably fast f2.8. Wide angle isn't very wide at 36mm equivalent, but with a 12x zoom, most people won't be buying for the wide angle, will they? Reasonably fast 1/2000 max shutter. LCD is probably the same as the T series or the W series (W7 has same specs), which is apparently fantastic. I can't tell if the AF Illuminator is via flash or by laser (laser is preferred -- it's perfect though a bit slow, hard to capture a moving child for instance). Highest ISO is 400, but my F717's 800 is not very great, lots of noise. It's likely the low light performance of the H1 is excellent, which is a tradition of Sony's almost.
Just off the top of my head. Looks like a very interesting offering. Not a horrendous price either.
